They have done a great job of preserving the sub.... I seen it when I was just a kid.... it was outside then... I hope to revisit it someday

The museum has made a beautiful and interesting display of this sub. In war time it never looked this good. It was varying shades of grey and machined metal. They always stunk when captured, smelling like the worst BO and urine you ever smelled. They would try to air it out when they were on the surface, but they spent lots of time submerged toward the end of the war.

I first visited the U-505 in the '60s when it was outside in the courtyard. It cost a dime to go through it. Wooden ramp led to hatch cut into the aft torpedo room, and the exit was in the forward torpedo room. It was a short guided tour, so I kept getting back on line and went through about a dozen times. They used to have the original blue and white sheets on the bunks back then.

Beautiful and interesting video about the submarine. If I ever come to Chicago, I'll check it out.😎

The MSI is a very nice museum with some really nice exhibits and pieces in their collection. The transportation hall is amazing. Hanging from the ceiling they have one of only two complete Stuka dive bombers paired up with a Mk1 Spitfire. There is also a Boeing 727 that you can walk through on the upper level, with part of it cut away to the structure. The landing gear periodically raises and lowers. When it is down, you look down at the city of Chicago on the ground level. A huge HO train layout that covers Chicago to the West coast. They also have a steam locomotive. The space hall has the Apollo 8 Command Module. Not to be missed when in Chicago.

Plan on staying for the better part of the day. If you have not seen this display. It is so worth it. You can imagine it from so many aspects. Underwater. Dry dock or subpen. If museums have awards for displays. I only hope that this won something.

Back in the 90s. The U-boat in Chicago was an urban legend to some people in Europe. I work in a grocery store in the greater Chicagoland area. Tourist would ask about "Where is the U-boat in Chicago?" I'd tell them. "That's real."

@@justwar76 It is a very nice museum, U boat exhibit is done very well...but you don't get to explore it on your own, you have to take a tour with about 15 other people and wear mask, and you don't see much of the sub like you can on other subs &ships..but this the only one like it left in the world so I understand them wanting to preserve it...

@@thyubernoob No ! There is another one, in Germany in Kiel. The U-595. it is exposed to the beach.

I'll be heading to Chicago next month from the north east of England. Looking forward to seeing Metallica play at Soldier Field, but will definitely be checking out the U-boat too. 🤘😎

Impresionante.

Alongside the Type VII Atlantic boats, the Type IX submarines were the long-distance boats of the submarine fleet. U-505 is a type IXC. The last generation, type IXD2, had a range of 31,000 nautical miles. The designations IXA, B and so on mainly provide information about the status of further development and the increase in combat effectiveness (some of the boats were longer - in order to be able to bunker more fuel; the deep-diving capability and the battery systems were also successively optimized, the turrets and turret armament have been modified throughout). U-tankers, U-suppliers and mine-layers were also derived from that basic design. On some these types, the foredeck was constricted in order to achieve a shorter diving time. The US coast was ravaged by Type IX boats for the first time in 1942 during Operation "Paukenschlag". The basic design goes back to two Type I test boats (U25 & U26), which were developed by the Germans in Northern Europe due to the Versailles restrictions - and the ban on building submarines - just like the Type II - from which the Type VII then emerged.

Wow, they have done alot of upgrades. When I toured it 10 years or so ago, it was a short tour starting near the engine room I believe. You could still smell the diesel. The bad thing about this video is seeing everyone with a mask on when the government forced lies on the public.
@MorePlanes Жыл бұрын
We actually only had to wear them on your while inside the sub. We were mask free around the rest of the museum. Strange I know, and at least they told you ahead of time when buying the tickets. Going inside the sub is an extra upcharge. The exhibit itself is included with museum admission.

@@MorePlanes Strange indeed. Thanks for the video. I was able to see parts of the boat that were unavailable when I went. 👍
