Beautiful. I can understand that Japanese people love that song because it is about heroic last stand (charge :) ) of Nikola Zrinski and his men. 2300 mostly Croats and some Hungarian soldiers, led by Croatian nobleman Nikola Zrinsky, defended the city of Siget for 30 days from 130,000 Turks, led by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. At the end Nicholas and about 600 soldiers charged from the burning city. Only 6 soldiers were captured and the Turks have released them because of their heroism. And this song is devoted to this last charge in to the certain death. (not for this 6 lucky ones :) Greetings form Croatia

What is more interesting coincidence is that Zrinski's life mantra could be compared to Japanese bushido. Zrinski stated that it is better to die with honorable death than to live shameful life. Did Japanese felt that strength in this song? Who can tell, but it is interesting nevertheless.

After the end of World War I, the American ship Heffron, evacuating Czech and Slovak soldiers from Siberia, among whom this Croat song was widely popular during the war, was damaged by a storm and was forced to settle in the Kobe harbour for 2 months for repair. During that period, the soldiers passed on the tune to the members of the oldest and the most renowned Japanese male choir of the Kwansei Gakuin University, established in 1899. Their repertoire hosts the song (which is learned not in Japanese, but in genuine Croatian) to this day, ending with it each of their public performances.[1]”

Donijeli im naši mornari u prvom svjetskom ratu. Bili su na ustrijskom brodu i sklonili su se u jednu japansku luku na popravak. dok su čekali popravak broda (nekoliko mjeseci!) pjevali su u Boj u boj. Japanci su bili oduševljeni i tako je postala jedna od glavnih pjesama muških zborova u cijelom Japanu. Arigato dragi prijatelji!

I have no idea how this great song is not known in Hungary. In the 15 years since I started learning history in school the first time I hear it because some random comment on a history channel from a Croat brought me here. Zrinski/Zrínyi died defending Hungary after all.

You can find English translation here: en. wikipedia. org/wiki/U_boj,_u_boj This is finale of Croatian opera "Nikola Šubić Zrinski" by composer Ivan Zajc. The opera is about historical event of Battle of Sziget where 2500 soldiers, mostly Croats, defended the fortress of Sziget from 100000 Turkish soldiers for 33 days. With fortress in flames and nearly destroyed, Zrinski and surviving soldiers rode out, charged the enemies and died as heroes. Like so everybody can see.

Kruno, ima pravo čovjek.. Japanci su mislili 50 godina (piše u gornjim komentarima) da je pjesma češka. Brod (Hefron) je prevozio češke i slovačke vojnike. Trebalo je vremena da se stvar razjasni.
