It seems to me that what is essential to human existence is change, so we can progress. If one shuts off one direction, e.g. sadness or more extreme emotions, then other dimensions are also reduced. That does not mean we should not pursue happiness, not just for ourselves but for others as well. To do this we must 'walk both sides of the street,' as I like to expressed it.
