One thing you pick up on a rewatch is when Buffy and Faith go to the demon's apartment, Faith turns on the light behind the corner without even looking, implying that she's familiar with the apartment. That's why they specifically had the demon turn on that light when they didn't even need it.

The reason they knew Faith was shifty wasn't any of that stuff you said, it was because the ninja dude got contacted by the mayor & hired to remove Angel's soul but by complete random coincidence, the ninja dude happens to be mates with Giles. Ninja dude contacts Giles & says "hey Rupert, the mayor of that town you live in just hired me to remove the soul of that vampire you work with" and pretty much everything else falls in to place from there.

People exaggerate with the Wesley-Cordelia flirting because they don't actually think it through and assume Wesley is in his 30s. First of all, Cordelia was 18 and Wesley wasn't a teacher. Secondly, Wesley was "fresh out of the watcher academy", meaning he was around 22. So there's only a 4 year difference between them and there is no "student-teacher relationship" or anything like that. It's also not grooming what the Mayor is doing with Faith. He doesn't have a family(we know his wife died of old age) and of course an evil creature like him, if looking for a daughter figure, would be attracted by the potential sociopathic killer who happens to be a Slayer. He's not drugging her or anything, he just treats her like a daughter. It's supposed to be weird, though, these are not normal people.

@@notyouraveragebear9326 I agree that by now (Buffy season 3 episode 17) there's nothing that establishes Watchers are high school age however in a later angel episode where the gang reverts to their 16 year old selves Wesley talks about being a Watcher-in-training. Also in the Tales of the Vampires comic we see a storyline of Giles where it's shown Watchers get sent to that boarding school at age 10. So while I agree with your trepidation the fact is he's not that much older than her.

I think my favorite moment of this episode isn't even really that apparent upon first watch. Yes, Angel was pretending to be Angelus. That means that when Angel hits Xander and says "that guy just bugs me", he's being ANGEL, which makes it all the more hilarious. And don't worry, there's more demons in the Buffyverse for you to love.

Both Buffy and Angel have fantastic character story arcs..some of the least characters, or ridiculous ones get such terrific payoffs years later, like Cordelia and Wesley, there’s no way to get there without years of awesome work on weekly episodes that show their development..

Enemies was a super episode where the arc of the show kept building towards Graduation Day. Again we see Faith kill the Demon in cold blood, as Angel had said previous once she had the taste for killing she would not stop. The twist with Angel pretending to have turned again to Angelus was superb. Faith realising at last what she is up against is brilliant. The build up to the finale in S3 is incredible. All is gradually being revealed with the Mayor and Faith against The Scooby Gang. The second half of S3 is really when BTVS became a stellar show!

they went really hard with the parental energy for the mayor. whenever i got bangs growing up my mom would complain that i was trying to hide my face and i should try to pin it back. i think it's literally just faith's 90's layered cut that made the mayor say that. his idea of appropriate for a teenage girl is ponytails and poodle skirts.

I think the writers should have explored Faith's past more, that way maybe we could have understand her motivations a little bit better. I think she was mistreated all her life and even the council doesn't take care of her. They have her living in a motel, instead of getting her place of her own.

Joss was smart enough not to repeat Season 2 while creating new things, but it is always a good reminder that Angelus is still there. And for someone to be ready to quit the show that fast tells me that A) they don’t trust the writing and fans that the show only gets better over time and 2) they may not be that much into it in the first place.

I love The Normies reaction to the first scene. Faith is looking at her hands like that because her true issues are showing blatantly to her with while blood covers them: her guilt over the Deputy Mayor killing. The Mayor's plan definitely would've worked if Giles hadn't have introduced The Sorcerer (not a ninja) to his wife. I never liked the idea that Buffy based an entire scheme of outing Faith, not knowing for sure if she was or wasn't on The Mayor's side, on Faith knowing where a light switch was. It isn't uncommon for a light switch to be near a doorway. Its natural to assume there was one where she though (in this case knew) because there wasn't one where it normally was. Not wanting to look for the books makes more sense, but even that isn't any concrete evidence against Faith. Nor is both things added together. Faith was acting sus at the demon's apartment, I agree, but it wasn't enough to jump directly into that kind of plan, for me. If Buffy was wrong about Faith, she would be another step away from trusting the group. Buffy, Angel and Giles were lucky they were right about Faith, in my opinion. I watch Willow's attitude towards Faith in this episode, before she knows about Faith, and I think Faith has done nothing, that she knows of, bad enough for Willow to have treated her like this since episode 4 (except choke Xander and again she was treating Faith badly before that). And what fans say and Willow uses as her excuses could easily be said of Xander and Buffy from time to time in their friendships with Willow. Because Willow is treating her this way before she know Faith has gone to The Mayor, I don't care what she has to say. I've seen people argue on whether hitting Xander was necessary or not. It was. Angel, at this point, is the only one who knows for sure Faith works for The Mayor and he's undercover. Faith might have done worse. A bonus is payback for Xander's mouth (deadboy, etc.) For Faith, "doing this" is all about ignoring her Deputy Mayor guilt and being around someone (The Mayor) who she sees as treating her better than The Scoobies did. And sadly, he is treating her better. Even her Buffy issues she explains to Buffy are just window dressing to those other issues. And considering what we've seen of Faith combined with what probably happened that the audience/characters don't know about her, I have no trouble seeing her manifesting her issues into this. Repeat viewings show Angel not quite acting as the Angelus we remember from S2. Absolute fantastic reaction to Angel being undercover. 23:30-23:31 Faith already offered (which gives more hints of how she probably grew up) and The Mayor didn't think it was funny.

Just fyi... Near the end of the video one of you said that Angel was possessed by Angelus when he was evil. That's not quite accurate. It's more that Angel's soul is possessing Angelus the vampire. The soul kind of suppresses the demon inside, but the demon never really goes away. That's why Angel is so good at acting like he is Angelus in this episode. His soul knows how to temper the demon inside. All he had to do was lessen the reigns over the monster inside. --- And Buffy saw just how easy it was for him to do that. And it scared her.

Knocked out in the middle of the street, at night in Sunnydale...do I need to explain how wrong that could have gone if a Vamp or Demon found him? Tell me, If that happened I wonder if the info gained would have still been worth it...I mean it's not like they could have given fair warning to stay inside to certain (I wonder how much forewarning Giles, Buffy and Angel had) people/or you know something etc...or what they could. Just ridiculous how it was handled. Sigh...a knock out could have turned into so much more...and worse.

Also sex isn't Angel's trigger. It's pure happiness, which isn't always achieved by sex. It just happened while they had sex because in that moment Angel was at his happiest.

Y'all are wrong, Faith is amazing. Sure she's not making the best decisions right now but she's an abandoned and traumatised 16yo with super powers. The Mayor is the first person in a long time, perhaps ever, who has actually tried to take care of her. Giles and the Watchers council dropped the ball big time when they let her live in that gross motel. This is on them as much as it's on Faith.

Yes, a shady guy covering his face is very obviously a ninja... if you're 5 and lack any other reference points. But hey, don't let that stop you from facepalming with abandon for a minute or so. I'm also glad the other guy has so much faith in the story that going back to a (still unresolved) plot point makes him "done with the show".

I really think Faith's character arc so far makes a lot of sense. She's a traumatized teen (a year younger than Buffy, I believe) who is heavily implied to have had a really rough/abusive childhood, and then had her Watcher murdered in front of her. Then she flees to Sunnydale looking for the only other people who could understand what hell is going on with her, and gets zero support. She lives in a sketchy motel (not sure what she's doing to pay for it...) and her Watcher already has a Slayer, so he's not all that interested in Faith - Giles really doesn't seem to go out of his way to support her in any way. Buffy is the only slayer everyone around her seems to care about, and none of the Scooby Gang seems to make an effort to get to know Faith or spend time with her. She's kinda the spare - there if needed, but out of sight out of mind otherwise. It's why she latches onto Gwendolyn Post so quickly - she's supposed to be someone there just for Faith, her new Watcher, and then that blows up in her face almost immediately. She also has nowhere solid to live - if you think about it, hotels aren't protected from Vampires, so that would be a constant threat - and none of the adults around seem to care that she's not even enrolled in school. Joyce is generally kind, but it's clear that she sees Faith as a tool that allows Buffy to access the life Joyce always wanted for her - going to university, while Faith takes over the main bulk of slaying duties. Then Faith kills a dude, accidentally, and all of her issues compound and she acts out. She's a scared teen who messed up big time, and even though Buffy tries to help in the beginning, she's also another traumatized teen, so it makes sense she doesn't have the tools to be much help. I get Buffy and co lashing out at Faith, because again, they're teens, but Giles should have really stepped up here, especially as he was also responsible for a death around Faith's age. He could have levelled with her and acted as an example that Allan Finch's death didn't have to brand her or define her as evil. All of Faith's choices get worse and snowball, but you can tell she's basically decided that hey, if everyone sees me as bad, I'll be bad. And then the Mayor comes in and gives her the literal crumbs of validation and support she needs, a father figure she didn't get at home or with Giles, and voila! Rogue slayer. I feel like it's done really well, but that could also be hindsight talking. I know I probably processed the episode differently the first time I saw it. Also - not sure anyone is actually gonna read this whole ass essay, but just in case, I am not condoning Faith's actions, just stating that from a character perspective, you can see the lead up pretty clearly, and it makes it tragic, because it could have gone so differently. Narrative foils are good that way.
