Pararescuemen (AFSC 1T2X1) are United States Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) and Air Combat Command (ACC) operatives tasked with recovery and medical treatment of personnel in humanitarian and combat environments. They are the only members of the DoD specifically organized, trained and equipped to conduct personnel recovery operations in hostile or denied areas as a primary mission.

I was a USAF PJ (37th ARRS, DaNang) back in the day. The issued firearm was a .38 revolver. Did some training on the old twin-rotor Husky. No one knew us; air force guys were clerks and mechanics. Glad to see the evolution and to see that PJs are getting credit for their accomplishments. Damn scarey thing to do.

Nothing but respect for these men! My father was a Vietnam era PJ. Off the top of my head I don’t recall where exactly he served, but I do know that he was also with the backup teams to recover the Mercury capsules. He’s now 73 and still tough as nails.

The ORIGINAL 33RD was at Naha AB. Flew TDYs from there to Da Nang and Osan, Korea when the Pueblo was taken by NK. Missed Tet, though. GB
