It's nice having our American cousins around here. The F-15's are always entertaining over head as they regularly mock dog fight. Nice little visit from the pair of Tornados also, they will be very much missed.

Lakenheath was my first duty assigned out of Tech School. I worked EMS WING CAT AGE, 1987-1990. I returned to the UK in March of 1999 during the Kosovo deployment, working C-5"s and other transports. Took a ride over to Lakenheath and in the 10 or so years it's been since I left her, she's changed a lot!! We had the mighty F-111F's back then and I truly miss them. Lots and lots of memories there for me, maybe now that I'm retired, I'll one day set foot on her again... David, when did they move the tower from the North side of the 24 end to the Southside?

Mike, I loved the F-111's on air show days . especially the day they rigged an Ardvark with a 20ft stove pipe sticking out the stern spewing aviation fuel into the jet exhaust, the flame was about a 100ft long as it did a high speed pass !! I never forgot that, were you involved on that rig, it looked a bit un-official ?

Was a crew chief at RAF Lakenheath in the mid-60s. F100D's and F's back then. Lived in old WW II barracks with John Caldwell, Sam Ascheleman (sp?), and another fellow -can't remember the name. Good times.

Awesome, the old H barracks. Man they were awesome. I am kidding of course. I remember building those damn bunkers at Alconbury in the 80s.

It is the air motor that operates the reheat nozzles, the nozzle contracts until the afterburner stabilises then opens out again.

@ 00:31 F-15 With a Tail Hook ? Very Interesting !!
@Aeronaut1975
@Aeronaut1975 5 жыл бұрын
Most military fighters/bombers have tail hooks. F-15s, F-16s, F-35, Tornado, Eurofighter etc... They are used in emergencies if the brakes fail.
@warrensmith2902
@warrensmith2902 5 жыл бұрын
Not for carrier landings as some might think(well maybe in a pinch or to make Navy pilots jellious). as mezsh states below used for brake failures before the end of the runway where available. Much easier on the aircraft and pilot then a crash net/barrier.
@rzbk08
@rzbk08 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah i read up on it and figured it out just never noticed that AF jets had the tail hook,

Nice.,. Love the WWII theme on the Eagle but, being the perfectionist I am, the P-47 is more analogous to the A-10. The Eagle would be more in line with the P-51 or P-38, air superiority type. Not saying the Thunderbolt wasn't a great fighter... Thunderbolt...Thunderbolt II.,.
@cb3609
@cb3609 5 жыл бұрын
the A10 can be compare to the A26 or post war skyraider ;) , p47 was a good multirole plane as the f15 is , despite designed as an interceptor ,climb and go fast and high !!!! but you re right the p47 had destroy more ground targets than any other plane !!!
