Why isn't there Bollards around the supports like the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate
@MC-yt1uv
@MC-yt1uv Ай бұрын
Because no one wants to pay for infrastructure until it is too late. Putting bollards around it would have cost millions of dollars and people would have complained about wasted tax dollars. Plus, the bollards may not have eve help, cargo ships have an incredible amount of momentum behind them and may have just crashed through anyway.
@man_on_wheelz
@man_on_wheelz 29 күн бұрын
@@MC-yt1uvThe bollards would’ve been placed several feet behind the pillars on either side and capable of taking the impact of such a cargo ship and if it doesn’t stop the ship, it would’ve at least diverted it. But you’re right, would’ve cost millions of dollars, but perhaps if it were constructed with the bridge no tax payer would’ve noticed.

It is (was) a single truss bridge. They have basically one supporting cable running through the whole bridge. Single trusses are much cheaper to build but if any part of the cable breaks the whole bridge goes down. @ianbelanger7459

There are back up steering systems, but they are not usually as capable as the primary and a loss of power can degrade a bunch of systems all at once. Ships simply don't drive like passenger cars. Sometimes a small failure can be unrecoverable due to the lag times and the simple physics of large objects with very small steering surfaces.

I keep waiting to hear about the vehicles with people that were traveling over the bridge when it collapsed. The workers that went down are known and we all grieve their fate. But there were vehicles on the bridge as it went down, right? None? I hope so.

The number one question Did the ship have an anchor, and if so, why was it deployed? ….OK I answered my question. It did deploy that’s the reason why they ship veered into the column at the last minute, the anchor the anchor caught hold.

An NTSB report usually takes about a year, because they are thorough. This one will take longer because of the complexity of the event.

When a ship of this size loses power, the rudder automatically goes to a neutral position!!! With a loss of power, no commands are sent to the rudder power, and it goes to neutral. When power is restored, the rudder will NOT get a command to do anything but remain at neutral until told to do so by the man at the wheel!!!!!!!! He was headed right for "the keyhole", and out to sea. This ship supposedly loses power and makes a "hard to port" turn, which means to turn to the opposite: a right hand turn!!! THIS SIMPLY DOES NOT ADD UP!!!! That ship intentionally steered right into the pylon!!!!! ACCIDENT MY A$$!!!

Just more government incompetence, the company that owns that ship needs to pay for this, not the government and theres no reason for an investigation to take 2 years... what a joke.
