Feb. 14, 2019: Joe Tsai, co-founder and executive vice chairman of Alibaba Group shares his views on these important questions. The United States is the world’s dominant power, and China is the world’s rising power. The relationship between the two countries will be the most important international and geopolitical question of our time. Are we headed towards a crisis? What can the two governments do to avert years of cold war and maintain peace and prosperity? How does this affect businesses and the peoples of these two countries? Skip the first 8 minutes of introductions but what follow is very informative and as current in July 2021 as when recorded almost two years ago. Tsai, a Chinese resident of San Diego, is one the principals of Alibaba (bigger than Amazon!). He faces aggressive questions from his UCal-SanDiego interviewer & helps explain why the Trump (now Biden) geopolitical campaign to decouple from China is bad for all.

23:00 - I find it a little disturbing that Susan Shirk dismissed the Chinese psychological trauma associated with a century of humiliation. As a task force in 21st-century US-China relations, I perceived her antagonism regarding Joe Tsai's explanation of the Chinese's mindset regarding the national trauma embedded in every Chinese. Tsai called it a "renaissance" rather than the West's translation as national rejuvenation. I do not see any dark connotation about national rejuvenation, but rather for what it is. The cynical interpretation is not warranted unless you perceive the other as a challenge, a competitor inferior to you.

Joe is too accommodating. US really needed a bigger slap for a wake up call. I get worried listening to the host who says she's been studying China(she sounded so conceited...scary) Americans tend to cherry pick what they prefer to see. You have to really spell things out to them like children They believed there was a slow down in things in improvement in China...what a shock they got end of year to 2020 when China not only turned around the Pandemic quickly but kept the economy firing and then introduced a host of leading tech, new space station, even faster HSR etc etc. Americans believe in their own delusions to their detriment. Hubris. This is the big danger for the US. There is also porous understanding of the way China is governed. Even Joe seems foggy. The success of China certainly wasn't simply due to American or foreign generosity in business alone. Clearly some very smart people are on the helm and the political system has enabled them to be harnessed to the maximum for benefit of the country's development. The benefit of the system is long term planning and execution, consistency where the US is bereft of this, subject to complete U turns every election cycle. How would the world take its word and trust it to stick to agreements it can renege at will on a wimp? Americans still can't see this defect in their system. It continues to deliver where trite publications like the economist or (Cough) Gordon Chang continue to predict its demise year on end for over 2 decades and counting Americans really need a paradigm shift in critical thinking to truly understand what they are up against. Right now they are boxed into their simplistic black and white dogmatic view of the world, and their own zero sum game conclusions.

Seriously, does Susan Shirk consider herself as one of the most influential experts working on US-China relations and Chinese politics (as she so claims on her UCSD profile)? Reference Sun Tzu’s Art of War, “know yourself and know your enemy, and your victory shall be complete”. At best, she only knows the American psyche, and probably predominantly the Democrat’s side of it.

Still life in these countries is fairly good for most of the population and the poor are entitled to health care and food (food banks are aplenty). Besides, many homeless could stay in shelters but they want to because in the streets they can scrounge for a handout (many of them when asked if they want food instead they insult you) and besides they don't have to stick to the strict rules of the shelters, namely curfew hours.

As a white Nazi and supremacist shouldn't u be in a German prison or executed? Or a Filipino whose country was raped by usa Why are you a beneficiary of democracy and human rights you obviously hate. Where is your basic humanity and sense of shame? Filipino was a country so invaded and women used as sex slaves for us troops. Yet u so willingly embrace western culture? Why the hell do u even adopt a Filipino sounding name. Shouldnt u rename urself to Donald trump and play American sports only?

What a joke. Joe Tsai doesn't know China. If he did, he wouldn't run his company with Jack Ma to the ground. His company's at the cross hairs of the CCP even as he simps. BABA has tanked more than 50%. China has a strategy of attract, trap and takeover. Tesla was courted before but now running into big problems. He confuses the Chinese people vs CCP. The Chinese people may be entrepreneurial but the CCP will ultimately take the fruits. As eloquent as Jack Ma? Jack's mouth is what got him in trouble.

Jack Ma tried to run an unregulated bank that could have seriously damaged the Chinese economy. Imagine if the corrupt US government did its job to prevent Wallstreet from causing the 2008 recession. Trap and take over is what the US and other colonial powers do around the world with sanctions and regime changes. The west is pissed because the CPC won't let corporations influence policies as the 1% own western democracies.
