My father, a marine in 2nd division was on tarawa, saipan, tinian and Okinawa. He survived to raise a family. He named his first 3 sons after a fellow marine who died on Okinawa. They were all heroes.

My Dad was a highly decorated WWII airman. Flew in B-24 heavy bombers with the 8th Air Force out of England. He said he thought the Marines that took the Pacific islands had the toughest job of the war. Tough men fighting in rough places for the freedom we enjoy today. God rest their souls and hold them close.

My dad was a pilot that trained bomber pilots. He was going to be sent to the Pacific flying P-38. They decided to drop the Abomb ,so my dad didn't have to go. His one younger brother was in the Pacific another entered early 1945. An Uncle landed on Omaha June 6 1944 as a medic.

Dad was a seabee/marine, he was detailed to build the doodle bugs , they had no material so they used the tin from the sugar mill. He said saipan was a bloodbath and this went better. Dad also said there was a leper colony on tinian. Dads unit was the 20th marines later the 121st seabees.

Tinian, Tinian. A town so big they had to name it twice! I thought about crossing over from Micro Beach, Saipan to Hilo Point, Tinian several times when the tide was out. But, I never did. I was just a kid, ages 3 to seven then. I think it was 1959 when I visited Tinian Island the last time. Leaving Saipan Island in 1960. It was very "spooky", to say the least. Lol!

I'm glad the third section finally showed up. It's a shame it is missing at least several minutes off the end. But it is at least it is more than was around before.

Modern day Tinian is my home, I love going in the jungles and finding relics left from the war, my grand father was in the marines and was a local that was recruited and fought on Saipan.

Anthony, you said your father was a local who fought as a marine? I am just curious how that worked out?How could that be possible. If he was a local,he would be fighting for the Japs, wouldn't he?

Incredible coincidence. Today we learn the US may be soon opening a airbase on Tinian as part of the pivot to Asia US defense policy.

My Grandfather was a marine and assigned to the USMC Headquarters company. He was a combat engineer and after the area was secure was assigned to the group (mostly SeaBees) in repairing and expanding the existing air field.
