+Tony Giovanni Fine. You don't really notice them when your DI is screaming at you. As someone who also has an issue with heights, the biggest issue was the rappel tower. But once you go down it, you get over it. I was in between 2004-2011. Try to get on a MEU.

Wow. I went thru that in 1981. 3rd bn. Mike co. Plt 3072. Not alot has changed. Used to be water underneath the slide for life. I was afraid of heights but the slide for life, the stairway to heaven, and A frame helped me overcome it. Thats why they call it the confidence course. I felt like I could do anything afterwards.

They taught me the last 4 letters of the word American... spell I can. You can do anything you put forth the effort. They make you earn the title marine. But you carry it for life. Once a marine always a marine. Semper Fi young man. That's the marine corps motto. It means always faithful. Again I wish you the best.

+MorphinTime Being on Parris Island as a recruit is kinda surreal on many levels. But, borrowing from the film Sunset Blvd, "it seemed as if every building was stricken with some sort of paralysis. Out of touch with the rest of the world." It felt like the colors had been washed out, the air was in this murky, grey color as if haunted. It was just a depressing, dreary place trapped in time. A stark contrast from MCRD San Diego. When you are on Parris Island you abandon all hope, there's nothing reminiscent of the world outside, the life you had. With the exception of a brief glimpse of a tourist here and there, you feel completely removed from reality.

If you're headed to Parris Island in December, it does get cold, if you're from the south. If you're from the north it will feel warm. My training started at Parris Island 18 Oct 73 to 28 December 73. So I had a taste of the sand fleas in October and very cold winds in December. Good luck recruit. Make Chesty Puller proud. You will learn who Chesty is. One day soon, you will be entitled to say: Semper Fi.

This gave me a very hard feeling in more ways than one. I wanted to join when I was a teenager and P.T.S.D which recently turned chronic ended that. Very hard to live with. I know I couldn't have done it, but I just wanted to be with the Marines or Army and do something for my country. Support our servicemen DO NOT support the wrong way these wars are waged. Fighting clean against a dirty enemy is never gonna work. I believe strongly if war is fought give our enemies Hell! FUCKING TOTAL HELL! I will never forgive Ossama Bin Laden for what he did to us. I didn't want the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and never will change my mind. Look at all the great people who have died. Not just us, but innocent Afghan and Iraqis who aren't part of the Taliban. Blame a lot of stupid politicians drinking cocktails and saying it's heroic to step on an IED and die that way. Horrible. Get out and show your support for the Armed Forces. They are far better than most of us.

Missed out on 2/3 of the times my company went to the confidence course, so honestly this is my first time seeing most of this. I don't recall how I missed the first time around, since I never went to sick call, the second time, I was unfortunate enough, along with one other recruit to need to get my boots resoled, so I was stuck wearing my dress boots, so I was left behind on fire watch.

if you want to join the Military join the branch that is right for you... I do believe the Marine Corps is the best branch, but it does have its downfalls. DO NOT let people make you think your less of a human being or less desciplined because you aren't a Marine. I have met many very squared away Soldiers and Airmen who are more squared away then some Marines I know. Join the branch you truly want, and never compromise on the job field you want! and yes, I am a Marine

to instill the sense of urgency. the instructors yell at the trainees to strike fear. soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen CANNOT afford to make a small mistake in the battlefield, therefore must be taught attention to detail and military bearing (maintaining professionalism). for the yelling WHILE they're doing the activities (drills and obstacle courses and such), the battlefield is going to be noisy, therefore its simulation to train to block out any distractions to finish the mission.

I had to do this with a fever and an upper respiratory infection the first time because I was too scared to tell my DIs I was sick as right before I told them someone else said they needed to go to sickbay because they were coughing up blood. The drill instructors screamed at him that he was a bitch and coughs up just a little bit of blood and he wants to go to sickbay. Then they thought I was being dramatic when I was stumbling when running in place so I had to run around the obstacles instead while waiting my turn. Still made it through everything though except I fell on the slide of life. So I got ITd when I got back for falling off that. Probably lost some braincells that day honestly. The next day I went to sickbay and had a 104 fever. Still don't regret it though. It kinda gives me extra pride that I made it through it with more adversity than is even expected

WOW! Way different than when I went through this course. we had constant havoc in our ears and there was no net to fall in, just 3 ft of water. Boot Camp seems different all around. These recruits seem to be doing there own thing. We had in instructor at ever step shouting, pushing us mentally. Confidence course should be a part to still weed out the weak. What the hell is going on in my Corps?? AND to you Royal Marine, screw off! We US Marines are still the most feared for a reason, Period.

being English, and hoping to be a Para. I respect the us marines BUT this seems like an ineffective method to aspire to. you need to be clever and self disciplined to serve, and having someone shout at you every step of the way to motivate you is mollycoddling in my opinion. you need to be able to think critically and use your wits, not rely on someone to tell you what you need to do every step of the way. americans dont seem to understand that shouting and being loud doesnt make discipline. you need to be independent and follow orders. proffesional. im not taking a dig at you lot tho.

+Kane O'Brien i always heard that the yelling was mostly to help train them to think in a loud, stressful, and chaotic environment as well as separate those who don't want to be there. some other reasons i can think of, is to push people beyond what they think they can do and to further discipline. And you could come to the conclusion that a person needs their own motivation to succeed. I don't know what basic training is like for the UK, nor am I saying its wrong.

This is the confidence course - just fun only done once. There is of course the obstacle course which was also about fun but run twice because there is more fitness elements to it. Then there is the assault course which done at speed in gear for time would lead to muscle failure. We would run this about three times during different hours for light training deprivation training. The confidence course was just more of a reprieve to mix it up - at least it seemed that way for me. It was lighthearted not much yelling mainly amusement from the instructors watching us like little kids. As for the net, that was for the instructors and was removed before we were allowed to dig in. Nice deep pool of freezing water waited the clumsy.

Kane O'Brien The United States 🇺🇸 Marine Corps has been successfully marking Warriors/not diplomats since 1775, they Corps is older than the country itself, they teach Marines mental & physical toughness & fortitude. Bootcamp is a molding & forming process, much more to the psychological aspects of the yelling, the aggressiveness & the overall demeanor of the Drill Instructor & the format of the Instruction than meets the eye. Far more complicated & complex than a casual observer can comprehend. The development of this winners strategy isn’t orchestrated by idiots, like an iron worker might forge a sword to be taken into battle, there will be steps in the iron selection, in the firing process , as he’s violently pounding on the steel against his anvil, that if observers just see this segment of the process , they may foolishly suggest that they could make a knife just as good with the lesser grade of steel & without all the blood, sweat & tears. And to the question that Marines can’t perhaps think creatively or independently. One of the Marines most used mantra’s is Improvise-, Adapt & Overcome. Marines will always do more with less. Semper Fi 🇺🇸 (1985-1993) OooRah Devil Dogs
