My dad was a CPO 20 year navy 12 more civil service fixing electronics on ships. He was tough as hell. When I got out HS he wanted me to join, I told him I've had 18 years of navy that's enough. I thought our floor in home was a deck, had to roll garden hose flat on deck. My bed was made every day not one missed. Every sat my room had to pass inspection before I was allowed out. I very seldom passed. Then we cleaned ammonia and water wash all walls, always cleaning. Old guy is 89 now I go see him every Sunday, he got a Purple Heart in Korea a shell came in killed everyone in compartment but him. Old guy is still as tough as nails and cleans his house every day. My wife asked me to just give him a hug, ha I said are you crazy he would think I've lost my mind. No affection ever, you will take advice and do as your told and when you screw up you will hear about it forever. He has taught me few things. I know how to work. And clean, be respectful, don't be a racist, never eat with your hat on.

You Should be pround to be in US navy ....why, because I am in a South Vietnamese veteran navy and the pay just about 12 dollars a moth in 1972 and we do not have a water to shower and do not have a coke machine and no hair cut, no movie, no good food, meat just blank soup, fish and rice. So just be bless to have every thing in a US navy, just look around the world a lots of people without food, jobs and home.

Spent 4 years aboard an aircraft carrier and worked my butt off with little sleep at sea. I did not blame the Chiefs for not standing watches as we E5s and below did 4 on 4 off but I never received an encouraging word or deed from a Chief before I left the navy. The Marine E7s earn their pay by close contact and development of individual Marines.....Chiefs could not care less in my experience.

I had this experience in the Marine Corps with the Navy in the same barracks. The Navy personnel did not care for a high level interaction, Marine to Navy. Marine Corps teaches subordinates needs should be provided for and cared for before one self.

I was impressed by this video but I would like to tell 1st class petty officers all of you even if you're not in a lpo billet you could loose your chief and lpo and you might have to step up as the acting chief so continue to learn even if you're not selected by the board you just can't let your division flounder adrift and hope that big Navy sends you a chief what helped me was I had a good chief that was a great mentor so when I had to step up and I was about to retire I had to step up in that role the fact that you are a First Class somebody most have thought you had that something in my day you wouldn't even be a 1st class if you were unsure of yourself and didn't have that confidence

Having read some of the comments below, I have to say something has changed.....I came into the Navy during the Vietnam era,,,, never went there, but the mission was global Anyway, I went everywhere North Atlantic, South Atlantic, South Pacific, Indian Ocean, Meditteranian and the chiefs were indispensible, could not have done the missions without them, coupled with some of the finest officers that the Navy has to offer.....; You know what you were getting into, so stop whining and be a man....sea duty is not for the faint of heart.....

Dude, it's a lot worse then people think. Expectations are shot down. I did one year and they kicked me out for a "mental condition". Really, it started with a rumor about me going crazy. The Navy is petty and political. Unless you've been in it and really know how it is, you really can't say anything. I loved being in the military, but there are those who ruin it. That, and we came in for different reasons.

@Kevin-mk6jo2 жыл бұрын
The initiation is not a requirement. Be within standards, CO promotion endorsement and leadership academy which is mostly some fat chief reading off a PowerPoint. Don't be fooled by the so called u have to do this. If they say that to u or discriminate u in any way, go to legal, do an IG. As long as the chiefs mess is using a federal institution, they cannot prevent u from meetings, etc. Heck, the association needs permission from the base CO to operate and.... not part nor endorsed by the Navy anyways. Know your rights and exercise them. And u will get pinned when u get paid... unless u get frocked before that, only the CO can retain frocking and if he does, what was the reason? If u met the standard, they cannot prevent frocking. Get legal involved, you will win. Once you are pinned as a chief, never ever be part of a DRB, not part of the legal system nor required... sometimes those idiots in a DRB cause more harm than anything. If u ever in a DRB, ask for a lawyer and keep your mouth shut, chances are, command has nothing on u. Stay in the DRB until 1630 and walk out at 1631, only the CO can secure your regular liberty, but ask the senior person first if he or she is securing your liberty. Unless they have a letter from the CO, they can't cause it isn't punitive. Know your rights....
