Corey joined us for a talk about rifle grenades and launchers in use by U.S. Infantrymen during the Second World War. Particularly we focused on the M1 Launcher for the M1903 Springfield rifle, however we also discussed some of the aspects of the M7 Launcher for the M1 Garand, and a very similar one for the M1 Carbine.
The rifle grenade as an HE solution filled the range gap between a hand grenade, and a 60mm mortar. Often forgotten about when discussing Second World War small arms, the rifle grenade played an important role in a squad's firepower and in what it could bring to bear against a fortified enemy position.
Unfortunately, the grenades we had on hand weren't live and at a demolition range, or else that would be a fantastic test. For the video we were able to use two rubber dummies, and one original WWII dummy that we didn't actually fire.

A point of clarification- the USMC used the Viven-Bessières , or "V-B" rifle grenades and launchers at the beginning of WW2 (specifically Guadalcanal) in parallel to the adoption of the 1903 M1 spigot style grenade launcher. The V-B was originally a very effective French military system, widely used with the Lebel rifles in WW1. Once the US entered WW1, it was adopted for use with the US Model of 1917 and [Model of] 1903 rifles. Large numbers of launchers and grenades (in the hundreds of thousands) were made. Post war, the Marine Corps retained their V-B grenades and launchers (for the 1903), and used them until the quanties of VB grenades were exhausted in late 42/early 43..

srspower Bad things have happened to people who've tried launching Tannerite. Check out the safety info page at Grog's 40mm Forums. I can't remember the exact site address but Google that and you'll see what I'm talking about. Nasty stuff. Legal or not, I'd advise against trying.

srspower Let's see, use a binary explosive that is set off by impact just a foot or two away from your face planted on the end of a rifle barrel that may or may not be sending a bullet at it. No offense, but if you think that's a good idea that's worth trying we might see your name mentioned at the Darwin Awards.

I actually have a 1903 made at Rock Island, some of the last run that was given to the Marines and used by them, it has a large repair made on the fore stock which I'm told was indicative of it breaking due to grenade launcher use.

I'm not a firearm enthusiast but I just learned a bunch from this video about things I've seen in images forever, never knew what they were. Particularly the tape on the strap and the attachment for the launcher. Plenty of images of rifles in combat with that launcher attached but not in obvious use as a launcher in the image. Thanks for that. My dad carried an M1 carbine in the Battle of the Bulge

Oddly no bullet trap bases were made for rifle grenade adapters or rifle grenades in WWII despite the fact they work and work very well! Needing to load grenade blanks separately is THE major reason the WWII US style grenades and adapters went way after their last use early in the Viet Nam war (where heavy rifle grenades packed a useful wallop which exceeds later 30mm grenades).

I bought my original in the mid-90s for $100.00. It was made for the M1917 Enfield but, converted to fit the M1906 at some point. I also have one for the M1 with the sights for the rifle. I wish I had gotten one for the carbine when they were much cheaper. Now, most likely I'll never get one. I have some of both types of grenades for display, now I needed to order some of those rubber ones. Thanks for the video.

Are they? I heard them use terms like NFA, SBR and tax stamps in other videos so I figured that at least some of them are Americans. I could be wrong of course. Either way, natural rights are natural and cant be nullified by no border or law, thats why they are called natural rights.

smolkafilip I get confused as to which presenter is which. They have so many contributors that it's easy to get them mixed up. However, to your point of natural rights, while we in this country enjoy protection of our natural rights, not many other countries show the same appreciation to their citizens. Some of the countries that do, won't afford the same level of protection of rights that our great country does.
@Treblaine
@Treblaine 6 жыл бұрын
That's the sneaky thing about NFA, it's not a ban, it's taxation. And the constitution empowers Congress to pass taxes, so its kinda self defeating. The taxes may be impossible to pay, but getting around it is technically only tax evasion. But these states that flat out ban things, yeah, they should be in constitutional hot water.

Good Video. I was listening to a YT old WWII Radio Program during the D-Day Invasion and the Correspondent said Infantry men were armed with an M-1 Rifle and some with a Springfield and grenades. I wasn’t aware of the Springfield’s use, which brings me here. (In JROTC we trained with M-1 (deactivated) and an Instructor said if anyone found himself in the Infantry it would be useful to spend some time practicing with the grenades and marking on the sling the distance of the arcs.)

With real rifle grenade blanks and grenades, the videos I've seen indicate they would kick the bejabbers out of you. Unless direct firing at an armored vehicle, the buttstock was placed on the ground. If having to shoulder fire, the rifle butt was placed under the armpit to avoid injury to the shooter.

So have you guys had any probelsm with regular blanks? I've been using regular blanks in my m1 garand with no problem but was told by quite a few people the fast Bruning powder in noise blanks is too quick and basically causes a dangerous pressure spike with the grenade on. I've also been told it's ok on the garand because the valve bleeds off the excess. I've shot about 12 no problem but you guys just did in on a Springfield so I wanted to ask. I also heard over time it could expand your barrel but I'm unsure the reality of this. I also have the service of supply rubber grenades and they specifically say don't use grenade cartridges. So there seems to be a bit of confusion overall about safety and longevity of gun
