I was one of two master helmsman on USS Antietam CG-54 between 91-93....always drove for all evolutions, the other M.H. was a 2nd class. Did a real emergency breakaway from Carl Vinson in 92 due to a electrical fire in Aux 2. Those were the days.

Was on US Chicago (CG11) In the Tonkin Gulf in '70 and did 6 straight Emergency Breakaways from and East Coast Oiler because her Navigation kept shorting out. When the Horn started blasting, as soon as the flow was stopped, they released the probe and released the pelican hook at almost the same moment. With proper incentive even an old Baltimore hull could do a tin-can breakaway, just took a bit longer to build up speed.

Emergency Break Away! Yea Baby! Unfortunately a lot of ours was due to Russian AGI sailing right down between us and the fueling ship. Our Song was the French National Anthem aboard the USS Comte De Grasse.

USS DALE, CG-19, 86-88. I was just a deckape, on the forward messenger line...getting a faceful in less-than-perfect weather. I do remember the working parties, passing boxes down the cramped p-ways, with everyone bellowing: "Pampers, coming through! Tampax, coming through!"

Refuelling a destroyer, you don't have enough people to do the toting & lifting so there isn't time to do your workout. We tried refuelling from USS Saratoga CV63 in the Med back in 85 but had to break away when they couldn't get the messenger line to us.I don't think they appreciated our breakaway song "Hit Me With Your Best Shot". We ALWAYS drilled emergency breakaways. If the real thing happened,we'd know what to do quickly.

The MS's and the mess cranks must have been up all night, cleaning up after that little maneuver. Oh well, a few gallons of Bug Juice and Navy Coffee would do wonders stripping the floors... I have a feeling that the chiefs, officers and the captain must have been eating off of the same melmac trays as everybody else until they got back to port...

I remember a rescue that we did about that time. The boat was over loaded and had a couple of gallons of fuel left and every little fresh water and too far from land to get back too. We took on the people and shot the boat. We gave them medical treatment as need and feed them and gave them new clothes to wear before we transferred them to a supply ship a couple of hours later. We never heard what happen to them after we left.
