I consider myself a right-winger, but still have respect for Cretien. I rather like his approach to politics, which is to treat the other side as a respected opponent, rather than some kind of evil strawman. And yes, he made the right call to stay out of Iraq.

Trudeau is a symptom of the sickness of capitalism. So is Pierre. This is what most voters don't know. They blame the symptoms, not the system. They don't criticize the system nearly enough and build a local mutual aid network that is outside the controls of the system (at least as much as possible) to counter the crushing capitalist system. But we need to start doing that, if we care at all about a livable future. Well, we already know parts of the world will become unlivable, but even more reason to try and create self-sustaining communities in place that we can, while we still can.

I remember when Conservatives ran attack ads against Chretien, making fun of his face paralysis from his stroke "Is this the face you want to represent Canada?" What a backfire ad campaign that was.

When Chretien was in office, he fixed he budget deficit but subsequent governments wreck it all. On that score alone we own gratitude to him.
