Imagine having a personal tutor available 24/7, ready to help with your writing assignments at any moment-that's the reality students are experiencing with AI chatbots.
These innovative tools are not only transforming how students approach their work but also revolutionizing the educational landscape itself.
That was generated by an AI chatbot in less than 3 seconds.
AI can do such magnificent things.
Not only can it generate a whole essay in just a few seconds, but it can also provide references and a list of creative ideas, hence receiving the title “humanity's greatest invention.
” However, while it is possible to use AI in a responsible manner, negative ways of using AI chatbots coexist.
Good afternoon everyone. It is an absolute pleasure to be here today. My name is Yunkyung Kim, a rising sophomore attending Korea International School Jeju. I have always been fascinated by the incredible advancements in technology that are shaping the world today, but am also aware of their irrevocable impact. Today, I am excited to dive into the realm of AI, sharing my perspectives on this exciting, but daunting invention.
One, two, three. This is how long it takes for an AI chatbot to generate a whole essay.
It's probably the fastest way to earn perfect scores at school. AI chatbots such as chatGPT show off a unique characteristic that makes them easily accessible to students. This was praised by multiple experts when AI was first introduced to the world, but not anymore. This has become a flaw, misused by students on assignments and exams that are designed to determine their levels and understandings.
A study reported that over half of students in college used AI to complete their assignments or exams, underscoring the widespread negative use of AI.
Some schools in the United States even forbade the use of technology in classrooms, raising awareness of the problems AI brought to education. While AI can be used solely as a reference, it can also be used as a cheat key for students to simply copy and paste texts.
AI, in education, is great when it comes to personalizing student learning and helping with class materials, but it increases the risk of developing AI dependence.
AI dependence, defined as excessive use of AI technologies that leads to dependence and addictive trends, brings serious effects including the spread of misinformation, a decline in one’s creativity, and the development of mental disorders.
Although the majority of students are aware of the serious consequences of using AI in their work, students still use AI because of its convenience. Producing well-structured text with advanced vocabulary in a short amount of time, AI is considered highly effective.
Saving both time and energy, students find AI as their best option when they are running late on time or when they cannot come up with innovative ideas. This conflicts with the renowned proverb, “No pain, no gain,” expecting good news or positive results when spending a minimal amount of effort.
AI chatbots are developing at an unprecedented speed and so do AI detectors.
Currently, educators use AI detectors to detect AI-generated writing from a text to prevent their students from depending solely on AI. However, since AI detectors lack the ability to entirely censor AI generated writing, educators cannot completely rely on AI detectors. This raises the concerns of plagiarism, the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own. Even if a student paraphrased the AI-generated text, improper citation will lead to committing plagiarism.
AI chatbots propose various challenges to the education industry, outweighing the benefits. When properly used, AI chatbots can be used to enhance students’ learning, butthe risk of developing AI dependence and committing plagiarism cannot be disregarded.
While it is called humanity’s greatest invention, it is also the greatest cheating tool ever invented, reflecting on it’s duality. Thank you.
