Lyrics:
You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want your story to remain untold.
All the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you.
You say you'll give me a highway with no-one on it
Treasure, just to look upon it
All the riches in the night.
You say you'll give me eyes in the moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbour in the tempest.
All the promises we make, from the cradle to the grave
When all I need is you.
You say you want your love to work out right
To last with me through the night.
You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
Your story to remain untold
Your love not to grow cold.
All the promises we break, from the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you.

Yeah but there's a lot of pain, compromise, despair, etc, essentially a wealth of negative emotion that one can go through before reaching that realization and acting upon it to make it your choice. Way way easier said than done in the end. Life is excruciatingly complex and you are often your own worst enemy, your greatest own biggest impediment

I feel that! I’m in love with my best friend and I just can’t freaking stand it. I want to make that shift but I don’t know how. I don’t think he does either, or if he even wants to. It seems like he does, but he won’t do anything about it. Lol, mind blown. He randomly told me today that I’m very influential….ok, dude, then why can’t I influence you to give it a shot? 😂

Thirty five years since the summer of 1989....sitting in a car with the boy I loved. Longing in his eyes...playing me this song for the first time. The music washes over me and I'm right back in that car at age 18 with my whole life ahead of me. Given the power to go back and do it again, I'd have never let him go. Powerful song. 35 years seems like a minute ago. That six minutes and 37 seconds stands still in eternity. In my soul. How can a song be so razor sharp for this long?

Yeah I think it’s a great choice for a song at a wedding. First dance or whatever. The other one I thought of was U2’s ‘love rescue me’. However I think playing it on a first date like the guy above said is putting the poor girl under too much pressure! 😯It’s a very emotional song.

We can all relate to the haunting power and pain of this. We've all seen that person who simply takes our breath away and for whatever reason...something about our circumstance...something about theirs...timing...they are just out of reach. And it crushes and burns and cuts like a knife in a way that changes us. And we somehow keep breathing. A masterpiece of visceral longing & unrequited love.

Shot in glorious b/w and in homage to Fellini, this 6.5 minute clip does more to evoke human emotions than most 3-hr movies. For me, it's a testament of the human spirit in the name of courage in the pursuit of the impossible. I love the fact that the band makes a cameo. Bono's vocals and the Edge's guitar are pure magic. Brilliance and Perfection. Enough said.

Beautifully said. It's the *perfect* musical illustration of unrequited love. Even without the lyrics you would get the sense of what the song is about. The music alone tells a powerful story and you can't help but *feel* it with all your heart. It builds into such an overwhelming frenzy of emotion and then the music dies away into a feeling of yearning and dashed dreams. Anyone who has suffered through unrequited love will understand.

From Wikipedia: Director Meiert Avis shot the promotional video in the town of Ostia, outside Rome on 18 April 1989.[4] Written by Barry Devlin, the video takes an unusual cinematic approach to the song, with U2 band members making only brief cameo appearances. The video tells the story of a dwarf played by Paolo Risi[5] who falls in love with a trapeze artist played by Paola Rinaldi, one of whom apparently dies towards the end. While there is disagreement amongst fans about exactly who has died, The Edge was quoted as saying it is the trapeze artist who dies.[6] The video pays homage to Fellini, who was shooting his last movie, La voce della luna, only a few miles away from the U2 set, and also to Tod Browning's 1932 film Freaks.[7]

Of course, the fact that those scenes showing him mourning near the end are interspersed with some shots of the trapeze artist apparently dreaming adds the extra layer of...maybe she's merely dreaming the whole sequence up, and that the dream is reflective of the "death" of her as a love interest for Risi's character!
@coverstealingbadger
@coverstealingbadger 3 жыл бұрын
@@MusicRunner82 Cool! A much more nuanced and imaginative take on the meaning of those scenes. I was much more literal in my interpretation and, after seeing the burial scene, assumed the “dreaming” shot was of her battling a fever. I like your interpretation better. 🙂

And I also relate to the Woman who feels a tender love for him and doesn't want to hurt him; but when she's kind, she inadvertently gives him hope. She doesn't mean to be the villain. But they will never be together, because she desires to be with another who is more suitable. It's a timeless Tragedy.
