I love love love this song. I saw the second Chicago show, and they swapped this out for A Sort Of Homecoming, which was also amazing, especially as I had never before heard it live (I've heard Bad live 4 times). I'll be at the Pittsburgh show tomorrow, so it'll be interesting to see if they switch back to Bad, keep A Sort Of Homecoming in, or play both (my hope).

For the “Wide awake” part - Bono sings a C#5 on the album version (which is an INSANELY high note for a baritone to belt), but during around 1985-1990, they dropped the key down to where the “wide awake” part was a C5, and sometimes a B4. This version has him doing a B4 as well. And he sounds great here. A B4 is a very high note, especially for a baritone like Bono. Considering how hard he pushed his voice throughout the years, it’s extremely surprising that he can hit that note, and hit it that well. To give some perspective of how impressive that is: Elvis Presley almost never sang B4s. I think there’s maybe a handful of times that he hit B4s - And they weren’t as powerful as these. I’m curious to know how Bono got his voice to be this strong again, because it sounded like he had pretty much lost his voice by 1991. That’s when he started focusing more on his ‘Lou Reed-esque’ lower singing.

Chris Serpicø U2 always played the songs a half step lower than the studio version since Unforgettable Fire..Bono until 1986 used to be able to hit awesome clean C5s on Bad,then he shredded his voice in the Joshua Tree tour and Lovetown and he was raspy as hell until he had a comeback in 1993,but they had already dropped Bad from the setlist. He had a harsh time between 1995-2001 but in the 360 tour his voice came back in full power,he hit countless sustained c5s,then his voice got lower and now he no longer hits the C,they tune down a whole step for songs like Bad and New years day

Chris Serpicø Also I think he's not a Baritone,but a Baritenor/low tenor instead,because of his tessitura and his ability to scream tenor high Cs,also his low range is not that deep,notice how they tune up a step for Until the end of the world which is very low for him

Gionny97 Ya, I always go back and forth as to whether he’s a baritone or a Baritenor. He has a very unique voice. Elvis, Lennon, Sam Cooke, and Bono have pretty much always been my favorite singers, and I feel like Bono is a combination of Lennon and Elvis. Anyway, I think his vocal on “Pride” definitely seems like it he’s a Baritenor, because it would be very hard for a baritone to sing. So, it’s very possible he is a Baritenor.

Chris Serpicø Well,he doesn't have the low range richness of Elvis or even Coverdale..But yes on Pride he's belting melodies centered around B4 and he has a light timbre,so I guess he's definitely not a Baritone

Little more power needed on the wide awake. You say you aren’t sleeping but it sounds like you’re starting to doze. Doesn’t change my opinion. I think Bono is probably the greatest rockstar that ever lived. He’s also probably had a very long, exhausting career. But this is not the song to be falling asleep on. Love the Simon and Garfunkel at the end, but I did almost fall asleep listening to this, and it’s my favorite U2 song, and U2 is arguably my favorite band alongside The Beatles. I’m usually wide awake for it. This song needs POWER, and deserves it, but this rendition does not do it justice. SCREAM THAT SHIT. YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR. SPHEREEEE LETS GOOOOO

I think the band did a super job doing the song. The only problem is that the person holding the camera did a lousy job. Whoever was filming this couldn't keep it steady and focused better.
