Bad has always been one of my favorite U2 songs. It’s eerily beautiful and takes you away to some other place familiar yet unfamiliar. I listened to this a lot my senior year of high school. Brings back a lot of memories, good and bad. Listen to the live version from around the same time, maybe Live Aid. Just sounds killer played loud.

Oh, I forgot how the opening chord makes me burst into tears!!! Edit: Yes, U2 songs sound similar. This is a song Bono penned after trying, (and failing) to rescue a friend who died of heroin OD. The lyrics abt wanting to trade places with his friend: "If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind.. If I could through MYSELF, set YOUR spirit free" as symbolism for *saving a friend through Grace* , just make me bawl my eyes out. 💗
@AndTheRoadGoesEverOn4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. So beautiful. My understanding is the song was not so much about Bono wanting to “trade places” with his addicted friend, but desperately wanting to give his struggling friend some of Bono’s own strength-perspective-grace so that the friend would have the power to let go of the addiction & be free. “If I could through myself set your spirit free, I’d lead your heart away, into the light and into day.” Btw, the “lifeless lifeline” is the cord on the microphone Bono signs into. This was written before wireless mics were cheap & common.
@AndTheRoadGoesEverOn4 жыл бұрын
(Con’t.) In old videos-like the Live Aid performance of Bad-you’ll see Bono hold up the mic cord and shake it ultra-meaningfully during the line, “If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind.”

This song is Bad (the name is Bad) Check out their live show at Red Rock from 1983. I lied to my parents and took a city bus downtown to buy their cassette tapes Boy,October and War from a Christian Book Store in the earlier 80s. Is it? I mean is it really? Or is it just nostalgia that is telling you that? I respect your opinion, but a lot of U2 fans let go after the Pop album. That was an atrocity. The name of the album speaks for itself. They tried to go too mainstream and lost their edge IMO. Yeah they have a few decent tunes here and there, but nothing that grabs your attention like the early, pre-Beautiful Day stuff. I mean, scroll down and look at the posts. They are all requests for CLASSIC U2.

This song still gives me chills. U2 was different than most other 80s bands. When everyone else was using synths and drum machines they featured the guitar and drum set. Their early albums had a unique idealism and sincerity. Nobody else could deliver a song like Bono. The drums build and build, (but I do miss the bass in this mix or remaster.) I’ve never been certain what Bad is about, but I take it to be about Ireland and the Irish people. The partition of Northern Ireland, the Irish people separated by this border, the Irish diaspora in places like America. 6:45 One of the signature sounds of U2 is The Edge’s guitar. I think that’s what you’re hearing. He used a delay effect on his guitar to give it that percussive texture, especially on the records from Boy to the Joshua Tree. It sounds like there is also a subtle synth sound in the mix during the second verse. If you like this song I recommend New Years’ Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Gloria, Bullet the Blue Sky, Pride (In the Name of Love), A Sort of Homecoming, Wire, Spanish Eyes, Red Hill Mining Town. I think I just love all the early albums. Achtung Baby! is obviously great too, but it represents a complete change of sound.

If it wasn't for Brian Eno we would never have had this song. It was an experiment, the band never finished it...almost a stream of consciousness. Lots to be said about U2. U2 guitarist The Edge, along with Andy Summers of The Police, were quite influential in that they got away from the standard power chord/ screaming solo style of guitar playing previously so prevalent in commercial music. U2 was one of the masters of what I call "build" songs - one chord progression, not the standard verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus arrangement - starting small and building up the instrumentation and energy as the song goes along. Along with so many bands of the New Wave era they placed a great importance on groove and pocket. When Punk and New Wave emerged they did not listen to their conerparts at their parties - they listened to Reggae and Third World Music (mostly from Africa; artists like Fela Anikulapo Kuti for example), which is ALL about groove and pocket, and is what you've mentioned (the beat) every time you reacted to a U2 track.

The song is about heroin addiction, in particular the epidemic in Dublin in the early 80s

Found you last night and binged on your stuff!!! I was drawn to your reaction of Johnny Cash's cover of HURT. Really enjoy watching your discovery of songs I listened to when I was 15-16. It was a different time, my friend. I'm not saying all the music in the 80s was as a great as some of the stuff you're discovering here, but Stevie Ray Vaughn, Queen, U2, Pink Floyd -- this was epic stuff to me when I was a kid and still is today. Was curious if you have anything by The Who on your "have to listen to list"? If not and you're curious (or even if you do) my recommendation would be to NOT listen to the album versions of their songs. The Who, at their peak from 1974-1977 were the greatest live band in the world. I have found that most people, even those who don't necessarily like The Who, would agree with that. I would recommend you check out the Live recording of BABA O'RILEY that is taken from The Who documentary film "The Kids Are Alright." It was recorded specifically for that film and was filmed inside a massive film studio soundstage at Shepperton Studios outside London in front of a small audience of about 300 fans. The energy coming off that stage could have lit up London for a night. someone once asked me, if I could describe rock and roll to someone who's never heard it before, what would I say. My response was: Pete Townshend cutting his fingertips off while wind-milling the opening power chord of WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN.

truth be told, it's not my interpretation but rather Bono, U2's lead singer, explanation of the song before they played it when I saw them in Worcester, Mass back in 1984 on the Unforgettable Fire Tour. I think I was 16 at the time.

@@grannysgonerabid7425 No kidding! I was at that show too! And I was 16. Just got my license and drove down from N.H. I saw them again at the Centrum on the Joshua Tree tour and it was not the same experience at all.

I'm a little late to this, but your take isn't far off the mark. It's about someone overdosing on heroin, but they produced this album with the idea of creating sonic landscapes. You being taken to different, almost physical places while listening to the song is intended. The bass is bad-ass. Give it another listen with headphones sometime.

I think that is exactly what you are supposed to get from this song. To me it is a song of self reflection, both times of good and bad. How you need to be awake in order to appreciate everything happening to you.

U2 is Irish. Great band with many good and different sounds to their music. Bono is known for doing great charitable work all over the world. Another great song by an Irish group is "Zombie" by the Cranberries..
