I don't under stand why people, even U2 fans, give this album so much negative criticism. Songs like this, Fez, Magnificent, and White as Snow make this record somewhat of a masterpiece.

@@raymondwalsh7520 I was like you, saying U2 from 1980-1997, sometimes even 1995. But boy I was missing SO many great songs and albums they released from 1997-2023. Like gems, up to their very best. And I'm sad I discovered them now because I missed so many of their concerts.

Sorry to hear that. For me it's the opposite. I am going through the worst period of my life now but was at my happiest during this album. I love this record too. If only they had replaced the middle section (Stand Up Comedy, Crazy Tonight) with the likes of Winter and Soon, I think it would have been my second favourite u2 album behind Achtung Baby.

This is one of those songs you skip on the album when it comes out and never listen to again...until 7-8 years later and you realise how stupid you were and that it is in fact art at its absolute finest. This song makes you feel a very particular way; weary and very relaxed. Could imagine it in a classic American black and white whiskey advertisement.

this song delights me and annoys me at the same time. it delights me because it's simply wonderful in it's atmospheric nature - particularly because of the Edge's guitar work, great as usual. it annoys me because it shows what No Line on the Horizon could've been if it were not for songs that deviate so much from this, such as "Get on Your Boots" and "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" (which are not necessarily bad, but they just don't fit well with the rest of the album) still, the best moments on NLOTH are as good as anything U2 has ever put out there

Real works of “art” as this song can have many meanings hardly the case that a song is interpreted by the public different from the intention of the composer, the history of “modern music” is replete with examples from Cole Porter to Bono, is part of the magic of “art” how many times has a “throw away” tune the artist cared little for become a standard? So many examples to many to count, what you take away is yours and valid - nice song TD thanks

A shame they didn't have more meditative and experimental songs like this on No Line, rather than the clunky chart baiting nonsense they put in the middle of the record (Boots, Stand Up Comedy, I'll Go Crazy). The album had great potential but a concern for the charts sadly ruined it.

I think "Cedars Of Lebanon" is about a war correspondent in the middle east. According to Bono, the underlying theme of the 'No Line On The Horizon' album is "peripheral vision"-- events taking place in the wider world, at the edges of human perception. As far as what message that carries-- it's up to you to interpret. That's why it's called art..

You must be thinking of either "October" or "Scarlet," from their second album, October-- which are also great tunes. Never question a U2 fanatic who's been listening to them since 1983. @WhaleBlueTwentyTwo Spw7gHl1Fpo Eno about the song. ThSeT94CeV4 This is the original version of 'Against the Sky'. CoL is just a snippet of a song from Eno and Harold Budd's Album 'The Pearl' with U2 playing over it. The album's like 30 years old now and has always been pretty obscure, so I guess Eno thought no one would know or remember? lol. I just think that the original does much more than U2s performance. I don't care much for U2 anymore either, especially their preachy stuff.

I, for one, would like to see people in that part of the world overcome their differences and live side by side in peace. But I also don't understand how a country (Israel) can claim to be a secular democracy while clearly giving Jews privileged status over Israeli Arabs. That being said, there are Arab governments (like Syria) in that neighborhood that are truly awful. If you ask me, doctrinal belief in religion (both Islam and Judaism) blinds both sides to the truth that all people are one.

@AnthonyMishima Oh and BTW as mentioned below, the deluxe DVD/CD gives you a complete narration of the guy in this video. He is no journalist. He is an illegal immigrant, and the whole thing narrates his awful trip to Europe (Spain, certainly) from the Middle East (Lebanon most probably). Belieeeeeve me, journalists and media types do NOT wash ashore in the morning without food or clothes or an Iphone. Hugs and peace.

@nouvada Not necessarily. It is a reflexion on how the media love to reduce complicated human dramas into simple headlines. This obsession is truly one of Bono's trademarks. The highest point being the whole "Zoo TV" concept/tour. Popmart was more diffuse, but really ZooTV nailed the dismay Bono expresses regarding the TV-o-cracy we live in. "The Fly" 's video being the point of no return of that obsession with... our obsession with pop and media. Remember all those TV screens...

@Telfordism Sorry if I write about Palestine and not about this beautiful song, but I want write about Palestine to an Arab. Israel can't exist because it's a ridicolous Country because a person is Israelian if he is Jew. There are Israelian Arabs but are citizens of second category and this is unright.

@supermind95 its not you being idiotic; you just worded it wrong. it should be "Doesnt Chris Martin sound a tad like Bono sounds in this song?" i like coldplay but Bono will always be the master and Martin grasshopper

@dtpc191991 agree man, that is close to the best line bono has ever written and there's a pretty long list of contenders for that title. this is the best song on the record by some margin i think.

this song is about the war, bono as a writer, writes as he was a soldier on lebanon, so he speaks about all the psicological problems that a soldier in his lonelyness in a foreing country in a war faces.
