How can a rock band stay fresh and contemporary and accomplished for 40 years and not sound dated or worn out?

By experimenting and not 'staying safe'. People derided them for this during their highly experimental 90's - but they were ground breaking. How many other rock bands could have produced something like Zooropa or Pop?? It also helps that they have someone like The Edge.....but all four of them are f*****g amazing.

In my opinion, probably their most solid, A to Z record they have done in a long time. No weak songs. The only thing that I can think of that might have brought this album down, was people felt they were forced to listen to this when Apple automatically included it in the iTunes. It was the best album released that year.

They added to Itunes.. Make a free itunes account for an Ipad or iphone or whatever, and you'll still probably get the album free... I woke up one day and here's this U2 album on it.. People complained.. U2's official statement was "F#%K You," or something like that..

Ben halpin I didn't know that, but your facts are wrong after checking them.. Apple paid 100 mil to the albums marketing campaign which included their ads.. And the article which I'm sure you read stated either $52mil for full product, or the upfront of $5mil.. Nor apple or U2 disclosed how much they actually made..

my younger brother passed away from colon cancer 2 weeks ago. As I was cleaning up and leaving the hospital I heard music on and off. It was this song buffering on my Iphone in my pocket, all songs were deleted but this somehow played. After my wife watched the video, the ending with Sam being told "You're gonna be OK" a coincidence or something more? Am I a casualty with the war of cancer? Like that character Sam. My name is Sam and watching my brother slowly die haunts me. I've played this song every day since.

One day i startes itunes and there was „Songs of innocence“. I wondered but startet to listen to it and noticed the wonderful songs, especially „every breaking wave“ - it‘s such a beautiful song and touches my soul everytime I listen to it. I also noticed the discussions and anger about releasing the album at the itunes cloud and that it appered to anyone‘s account - which I just can‘t comprehend because without this I would have never had the idea or intention to listen to this wonderful album. I just want to say „Thank you“ to U2 and itunes for giving me access to this wonderful music ❤️

U2 hits the spot so hard with this song, definitely their best modern song in my opinion.

It wasn't easy to condense the full McArdle video into a 4:38 minutes story, but they've managed to do it very well. The story basics are still in here and it all seems coherent enough. Well done :) It's now the perfect accompaniment for this fantastic song. Thanks U2, once again. Thank you for being the soundtrack to many lives ♥

It remember when these songs were forced onto our iPhones and everyone hated on it. Years later they're still on my iPhone 6 and I've only just realised how good these songs are
