This is a song rehearsed by U2 in 1987 during their Joshua Tree Tour. It was never actually performed in concert and released officially. I found it on the internet and decided to share it with you. The sound is not really crisp, but it's a good song anyway.
Hope you enjoy the little slideshow I've made for this song using photos and a clip by Anton Corbijn from that era (the countdown at the beginning is from the Rattle and Hum outtakes available here on YT) :)

The only difference between the Edge and Townsand is this...live the Edge carefully chooses what he plays and every note of every solo he does is amazing despite the complexity. Pete on the other hand plays a ton of solo stuff but MOST of it is unremarkable. He loves to jam to no end BUT he is no great lead guitar player and that is a fact. The Edge on the other hand doesn't claim to be a gun slinger but The Fly, Love is Blindness, Mysterious Ways (live ending), Bullet the Blue Sky live I could go on all day are amazing because he carefully choose the song, the moment and the notes.

I get irritated when I hear people run down the Edge. They just don't realize, or want to realize the complexity of what he does. A lot of the shredders are playing the same runs that have been done by loads of other guitar players. In my opinion, he changed the landscape of the instrument in different ways and inspired a whole new generation of players to look at their guitars differently.

@@isadorealire5722 Yes. Simple minded don't get it. They think music is sports. I just watched their earliest t.v. appearance. Edge is playing classic rock style solos at 18 - very well. Most dummies (read guitar jock dudes) assume he cant play because of the style he invented doesn't include a million solos. But it's UNIQUE. The history of rock guitar was long by the time Edge came along and he knew it. So he invented a totally original sound. No "blues" in it at all unlike millions of guitarists. He is the sound of that band. You know it instantly. Not easy to do.

woudn't be who he is and woudn't play the way he does... Anyway... U2 is about making great music, great songs, great albums, great shows.... all of this just to communicate an idea or a group of ideas through music, and they use all the possible tools to achieve it, is great to see them and have the chance of being part of the generation which has seen u2, maybe in a hundred years nobody will remember them,as Edge said once, could be like chamber music for us today...

@ultanbeare If Edge wanted to play like pete townsend, he would play like pete townsend, but instead he wanted to be original and go his own way. Keep in mind that this is just a jam session.

U2 is not about the best instrumentists, Edge is not about playing hard solos and that sort of things, though he's capable and has demonstrated in songs like Bullet The Blue Sky (especially in the live versions), U2 and edge particulary is about ideas, there's just no point in compare Edge's work with Townsend's, is something just different, both are great, and is fair to considerate the time of each one, if Edge were part of The Who's Generation...

@HolaDeco look check the song and compare like with like the amazing journey ,its not uncommon for bands to experiment with other tunes and you find they may not have released moving out due to the fact they were to closely matched,my comment is not a insult towards the edge or any U2 fan i after all are one my self in a big way ,i have seeing them over 19 times since 1983 and i have met them more than once ,pete townsend is a legend guitar player way more skilled than the edge no sound effects

guess you never heard of rory gallagher ,johnny marr ,billy bragg and many others that he doesn't come close to,the edge is amazing legend special effects player without them foot pedals he doesn't rate as a guitar player not trying to insult the guy am a big u2 fan love them but am a honest fan 2 ,and they wouldn't be insulted them selfs in fact they agree when they got to actung baby thats when they made something that they could be proud of and am certain they may top it fingers crossed

did you listen to the whos" amazing journey" ? youtube it, u2 moving out is a copy cat of same tune bands do this all the time part of the creation of getting the perfect tune ,pete townsend is without question a master, the edge been his pupil example the edge uses sound effects foot pedals to change sound of strings delay effects extra ,pete townsand however uses his god given tallent and no sound effect foot pedals, even today the edge could not cover match a guitar solo of pete townsend
