I discovered U2 in 1984 when I was 12. I went to the Joshua Tree Tour in 1987 when I was a sophomore in high school here in Illinois, USA.

There's great stuff being made now, you just have to look outside the mainstream. Plenty of goth bands (old and new) are making great music. Kaelen Mikla, Lebanon Hanover, Pink Turns Blue, etc.

In regards to pop music yes. In the more heavy spectrum, we have evolved as a musical genre.

What is the best song ever written? It depends on what it means to you. Based on when I grew up, and what I was doing in 1983, this will forever be the song that is most dear to me in my life, even if I only listen to it rarely nowadays. It's "my" song because it was my soundtrack at a key point of coming of age; it felt so fresh back then, and the guitar solo was like nothing else I had heard before. (And the longer album version is better than the radio-edit version which is this one.)

I can recall a dude lent me the cassette that I listened during a free class in high school. I was stunt how revolutionary this album was. Good old days, never gonna come back… see today’s craziness.

The song that introduced me to U2, damn, what a decade of music the 80's were. I was 12yrs old in 83' trying to figure things out . I was poor as dirt but so was everyone I knew but I had my MTV, Night tracks on TBS on friday nights, and Kasey Kassem Top 10 on Saturday mornings. The decades passed and I made a good life for myself financially and personally. I crawled out of that small Florida town and have everything a man can want materially now, however, there's still that little poor Florida boy who looks me back in the mirror every morning and smiles, knowing he got me here where I am today. If I had a time machine I would go back and find that poor 12yr boy, shake his hand and tell him, don't change a god damn thing, you will proud of yourself later...and you'll be watching this music again, just not on MTV. Don't worry you'll understand when you get there.

This song is so evocative of my youth, a better time, before social media, camera phones, conspiracy theories, and p0rn rotted our world. Please send me back so I can do it all again. Those years were so precious. I lived the heck out of them so I have no regrets - I just miss it. We just don’t have the same hope, freedom, and creativity in the air today. The 80s were electric with all of it. We’re lucky to have been there.
