I think this is really a song of hope. Bono write the lyrics at a time when the band was struggling to figure some things out and they were in danger of breaking up. The song says we're one, but we're not the same, we get to carry each other. I think it's like coming to terms with the idea that there may be disagreements and differences between them and that's ok, they are still one as a band. So I think it's more about the band members relationships than a romance but as usual with u2 there are many layers so it can be applied to a romance too.

@@marlew6629 I thought this was the song that kept them together. They were very close to breaking up while recording Achtung baby and this song helped them realize that they were “one”. Ohhhh Pancake!! You've made an Irish boy really happy reacting to this song. It's so emotive for me as we used to play this in the orchestra I used to be in. The horn and bass orchestra parts are exceptionally soul wrenching. If you ever hear the strings on this when an orchestra plays it it's just like your soul is being ripped slowly out. It's THAT haunting. Beautiful reaction B!! And, obviously, lots of love from Ireland!!! BTW, another recommendation for you is a great British indie pop rock group called Gene and their song Olympian. AND, you get the man, I am sure we will throw a few €, £ or $ your way to get Bono there ;) x

I interpret the lyrics as referring to how many things love can be and do - love can bury you or carry you through. But we all experience it in some way so it is one and makes us one, even if our experiences of it are different. I get the "sad but also hopeful" vibe, too. Great reaction! I love this song.

Wow! Thank you for reacting to U2! One of my favourite bands of all-time. *One* is a gem. Lyrically, it is definitely admixture of heartbreak and still retaining hope for love in general - "one loving relationship perishes so that a future love can flourish". So what you mentioned, mixed feelings, certainly is understandable and actually an accurate sentiment pertaining to these lyrics, so well vocalized by Bono. I would recommend delving deeper into U2, I think you would be appreciative and enjoy their music. My suggestion in my current mood would be U2 *Discotheque* - just a fun, rockin' pop of a banger! The video is a blast too! There are so many other U2 songs as well, huge catalogue of hits! Thank you my friend, this reaction to this U2 song made my evening! 🍾😉

My interpretation is that it's a song about people who agree to sit down and try to reconcile a conflict yet struggle with their history together and keep coming to an impasse. Sometimes, the hurts run deep and while both parties may still care about each other, they just can't do much but agree to disagree. That being said, it may still be worth it to try and find some way to move forward together, despite the differences. Perhaps there may be some common ground to focus on? After all, there's always hope for a better tomorrow, even if we both agree that today sucks. There were actually 3 videos released for this song - This one which was filmed at Nell's in NYC. Another had Bono's real dad in it with the band in drag and Bono coming out to his father. The last one was super-arty with running buffalo in tandem with noted AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz's art, (the song struck a very powerful chord with the LGBTQ community at the time). Glad you enjoyed it, cheers ~

Some people will say this is there most famous song cause from there prospective it is but they have been going for along time so there are lots of songs to pick from.the first U2 song I heard was new years day and then pride(in the name of love) which is emotional for me any song from the Joshua tree album would be a good reaction to do as that's the album I played lots in my teenage years. There is a version of one with Mary j blige on it that would be good if you checked it out to see the difference there both good though.

One of the best break up songs ever recorded. The song was inspired by The Edge's marriage breakup and also one of Bono's gay friends, whose parents rejected him when he came out.
