The father is olding the scales in his favour, at the end he steps off the scales. It's a metaphor for the old soviet system to get off the scales, which is still just as relivent today. The early 90s had so much hope, by 2000 it was dashed, now it's war.

In my opinion, this song is about a father's disappointment in his son. Not that he is gay, but that he did not live up to his father's expectations. Any reason the father feels disappointed is equally destructive to the child. I can feel that disappointment in my relationship with my father in this song, I'm 62 years old and when I listen to this song it still makes me cry...

This is probably one of the best 90's songs as it opened up the 90's and closed out the 80's. Achtung Baby came out just as the Berlin Wall was coming down so this song is the staple song for the 90's as the lyrics are very haunting. The music is very basic and this is why the song is so easy to listen to. Not the best vs U2's 80's hits, but this song was U2's desperate gasp to keep them going. As has been noted by their drummer Larry Mullen, this song is what saved U2 from breaking up. U2 from 1979 to 1988 is not the U2 of the 90's. U2 needed to reinvent themselves as the 80's were over and Achtung Baby is a the finest example on a new direction. It's what has kept them going since the early 90's.
