Lyrics:
So you never knew love
Until you crossed the line of grace.
And you never felt wanted
Till you'd someone slap your face.
So you never felt alive
Until you'd almost wasted away.
You had to win, you couldn't just pass
The smartest ass at the top of the class
Your flying colours, your family tree
And all your lessons in history.
Please, please, please
Get up off your knees.
Please, please, please, please, oh yeah.
And you never knew how low you'd stoop
To make that call
And you never knew what was on the ground
Till they made you crawl.
So you never knew that the heaven
You keep you stole.
Your Catholic blues, your convent shoes,
Your stick-on tattoos now they're making the news
Your holy war, your northern star
Your sermon on the mount from the boot of your car.
Please, please, please
Get up off your knees.
Please, please, please
Leave me out of this, please.
So love is hard
And love is tough
But love is not
What you're thinking of.
September, streets capsizing
Spilling over down the drains
Shard of glass, splinters like rain
But you could only feel your own pain.
October, talk getting nowhere.
November, December; remember
We just started again.
Please, please, please
Get up off your knees, yeah.
Please, please, please, please, ah.
So love is big
Is bigger than us.
But love is not
What you're thinking of.
It's what lovers deal
It's what lovers steal
You know I've found it
Hard to receive
'Cause you, my love
I could never believe.

This Lyrically magical and meticulously thought out cut, is one that I always have to go back to when I want to learn about humility...the reality that we talk and act out out own Godliness, (Holiness) is a joke compared to what the reality is of out true beings...we are by nature judgemental, players in an act of self righteous behaviors, and can't even notice the ones right in front of us who need our help and Love. I know that I am being dramatic, but the truth is that this video touches deep in my soul everytime that I watch it. I really gained a lot of respect for Bono and U2 after seeing this video on the 90's - 2000 CD that I use to call "The Gospel according to U2"

"Love is not what you're thinking of." Tough, and true no BS rock and roll here. This song strengthens faith even when you crawl. Live, the band puts every ounce of energy into this song climaxing in that solo and Bono cry/yell as Adam and Larry thunder it forward as it ends in a whispering falsetto. Edge's riff just before the "September...." lyric is so perfect and one I enjoyed trying to play on guitar. The remix version is better than the album version. Let's never forget that this song deals with serious and deeply emotional issues of faith, politics, war, brotherhood/sisterhood, justice, and a slap that is a welcome slap in the face during a time when I remember a lot of nonsense in the music industry. The album rocks, and is deep and complicated musically and lyrically. Loved the experimentation with electronics and the risk the band took and I believe opened gates for other artists. It needs a LIVE revival on tour!!!

The first time I heard this beat, was on my Pioneer CD stereo rig, with 2 rear 12" sub woofers under a custom rear bench seat, with 4 surround mid ranges, and 2 dash tweets that would fry your ears, if the windows were up...All strapped throughout a custom dropped n chopped cargo 96 Astro mini show van with ground effects / neon light rails and 12 grill blue hypnotic lights, while I flying across the i-64 bridge, blasting this music, into downtown St. Louis, MO. nighttime skyline, by the arch at midnight headed to the clubs all along Washington Ave. on a midsummer eve in 1997 It felt like I was in a scene out of a movie and is forever embedded in my mind!

I remember seeing them perfom this live on MTV when I was a kid and it blew me away. I was fortunate to be able to see them a year ago, and they played it live.. They are on another level with this song.

U2’s most underrated song. I was legit surprised that they didn’t play this on the Experience & Innocence Tour in 2018, given some of the themes that they were pushing on it.

@@marcoalla4931 again, it’s shocking that they aren’t playing this at their current residency at the Sphere!!!! With two wars that are essentially religious wars (Ukraine-Russia, Israel-Palestine, as well as Yemen, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and even places like Nigeria and Ethiopia).

rikiradish i was at the pop concert and this was the song that made the night. i hear a lot of u2 fans critisizing this album and how it is not like autung baby or joushau tree or....... but i thank u2 and other bands who do not get stuck in thier box of success and keep putting out music in what they think their fans or others want to hear. U2 has always come accross as a band to me that always put out what they love to listen too first. one of the greatest bands ever!

No fancy shades, no masks, this is U2 stripped down to the bone. All U2 is actually about. Lyrics a little indirect which is great, because with words direct, half of them would be beeped explicits. 20 years of masterminding heaviest metal ever - and suddenly, I found this song to be heavier and more deadly than most of Slayer's work.
