Chris L What do you think those lyrics mean?
@chrisl22859 жыл бұрын
cmac You know, I've never really thought deeply about the actual meaning. What is great about those lyrics is the way Bono is stating things that are impossible to do....where you can't do the very essence of what you are trying to do. "Running to Stand Still" also follows this formula and maybe the rest of the lyrics are just background to the ultimate meaning of the song, which now that I think about it, I've always taken to be a sense of futility....of trying to make a major change yet being unable to do so. I love U2's earlier stuff, up to Rattle & Hum but I'm not really familiar with the stuff after that but I think this is one of their most powerful songs. Bono is an incredible lyricist and vocalist and Edge is a genius at providing musical emotion for Bono's lyrics. I've alway felt that U2 deserve their status as "greatest band in the world", something I think a lot of people disagree with.

I know many people died because of an addiction. But your message just grabbed me and it was like I felt the pain. I know this song for about 25 years listened and played it many times over the years. But lately this song showed up on many different ways into my life. I didn't realise it was a sign. I just discovered I was having an addiction over the last 10-15 years. It wasn't drugs, alcohol or s.x but still, it knocked me down. With respect...

I’m glad he dedicated it to the men and women of the military. Most folks don’t seem to realize the burden that military members carry. 22 veterans kill themselves day. Many more are struggling with addiction. When I got out of the Air Force, I most certainly struggled with addiction. I’m very grateful that the Good Lord gave me another chance at this life.

We just gave $50 billion to Ukraine with zero oversight on how it is spent, yet veterans like u must rely on private charities begging the public for money to get help & services; a public btw, that already has 50 cents of every federal tax dollar taken yearly & given to the Pentagon for "defense". Something is horribly wrong. Maybe the "brave men & women of the military" need to start speaking out in some way. If someone from the Left speaks up, it's inevitably twisted into a hatred of "the troops" somehow; and if somebody on the Right raises the subject, they are branded as a government hating, Waco conspiracy "wingnut".

He didn't dedicate it to the army, he dedicated it to the people of the army. And think what the song's about. Think about the title. Running to stand still. -> slaving away at something but not getting anywhere. And the song is about drugs, futility and the waste of human lives. I think it's the perfect song to dedicate to soldiers who "only see one way out". I think it's a prayer for them, that they can find another way out.

Silentalker fair play to you , a deeper understanding . Not preaching to you pal, but do you know it’s loosely about addiction in an area of Dublin blighted by heroin addiction , hence the words” I see 7 towers” , the 7 tower blocks in ballymun . All the best from a north side Dubliner

I first learned how to play I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For on guitar without knowing what that song meant. I just liked the sound of it. After that, I learned how to play this without knowing what it meant. I just liked how it sounded. Right before I learned how to play guitar, I was saved and baptized by my church and overcame addiction. Funny how that works. All I know is, it wasn’t me.

Thank you Bono for your brilliant and powerful lyrics❤❤❤🦄🦄🦄 It's funny that I misheard "a la la de day" as "I have a lot of days"... but that may not have been coincidence. That's truly what this song is about. To never give up, no matter how hard life gets.🙇♀️💝

A day at a time I stay clean..The devil of addiction caused this woman to use one last time . I seen her wensday nite we were laughing and talking ..I last spoke to her Thursday nite.. I drove from Washington, DC and was there in 2005. And my precious mom drove in from Columbia, Missouri to join me in something about which I was so excited. This song is about a friend of Bono's who died of drug addiction, I believe to heroin. I am so sorry to read, even in the first responses below, that three people know others who died of addition. My best friend in Chicago had a son commit suicide after becoming addicted to and controlled by designer drugs. I pray even now , four years after the previous comment here, that God's Holy Spirit attends people like Casey, Mad As A Hatter, Jimmy, and anyone else below who know this cruel loss first hand.
