Though I wasn't really a big fan back then when they were big in the 90s and 2000s. As I grew older and listened more to the famous ones, I got more acquainted to their sound and realized how I really liked their sonwriting skills and lyrics. Though they are not my favorite one, can't argue someone thinking they're the biggest one. Like so much their Joshua, Achtung and Leave Behind especially Achtung Baby. One day I'll venture into their oldest records and don't mind listening to the latest ones once I forget how they sound. To me they're like the Springsteen and Dylan of rock music when it comes to songwriting and great lyrics though I'm more of a hard rock kid a la Jovi, Leppard, GNR and Aerosmith.

Bono was in the song Do They Know It's Christmas which was mainly British artists and was the original song for African famine relief that later inspired the American song We Are The World. The whole band U2 played at Live Aid in London's Wembley Stadium. The concert was also at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia simultaneously. One artist, Phil Collins, played at both... first in London, then flew to the U.S.

Most perceptions about U2 are based on their popular big hits like With or Without You, a great song. But their edgy, innovative, atmospheric sound is where the real fruit is to taste. So glad you started with this song, a deeper one. Unforgettable Fire would be good to dig into after AB.

In fact.... we had "christened" a brand new "CD boombox" with this album being the first!! We were blown away by the unique sounds... and in depth lyrics. Also... their follow up album: "Zoo Station" is creative and awesome!!! Lemon..like you said, is a gr8 tune.

My first exposure to U2 was watching their "Sunday Bloody Sunday" video on MTV which was performed at the Red Rocks Amphitheater. I've been a fan ever since. That video is a must-see. It's haunting -- a cold rainy day, their breath billowing steam out of their mouths, and these giant torches lighting the amphitheater. Plus the theme of the song. Absolutely hooked me in and I've been a fan ever since.

U2 is a very underrated band especially the fact that the edges approach to guitar in a band setting is completely different and original. You had Queen style of guitar in bands then you had edges simple musically rhythmic approach but created an entire new sound that has prompted an effect called shimmer for guitar to be created and a lot of guitarists today use this now. Then if you look at Larry and Adam they are a really locked in rhythm section. The melodies are extremely beautiful and lyrics are great. Bono’s voice is amazing although it has changed with age it fits the way he sings. His heart and emotion is there even more than ever. This song in particular is like a real poem.

It would be great to see you react to some of their early stuff - An Cat Dubh (good luck pronouncing that ;-)), Into the heart and out of control are my favourites from Boy. Cheers.

I second that. One of the most epic live performances ever. Literally launched U2 into global super-stardom. And what happened during that set (I don’t want to spoil it) was 100% unplanned & real. All I’ll say is a British newspaper tracked the girl down yrs later & she said she was suffocating unseen when the crowd surged & Bono saved her life.

I didn't realise you knew so little of U2 guys! We shall have to rectify that. Their first album was released in 1980, so they became famous as an 80's band and my favourite U2 albums are War, The Unforgettable Fire and Tha Joshua Tree (albums #3, #4 and #5). Achtung Baby came out in 1991 I think, and was considered a career reboot, with a slightly more experimental sound, and there are plenty of other great tracks on it. Nick, your 'Lemon' album was the follow-up, Zooropa. I was just playing some U2 yesterday in the car and thinking how much Alexia would like Adam Clayton's bass, it's usually much more upfront than this track. They are still recording, did a Vegas residency recently I believe, though I have lost track of their music now. 84 - 91 was my favourite U2 period. I think you'll start hearing more U2 music soon!

Musically, U2 have been like 5 different bands at this point. This is version 2. Incidentally, the band never liked the studio versions of this song; the bridge was basically cut out of a different song and stitched into this one. Steve Lillywhite came back to mix this song because the rest of the band were sick of hearing it. Oh, and Lemon was from Zooropa, their best album. I guess this is a good time to pass this along: this song was part of the first encore the last time I saw them. Every woman in the place screamed at the top of their lungs the instant Bono sang the first line, and the crowd sang the chorus so loud we damn near drowned out the band.
@KoYou9NWTM4 ай бұрын
Actually, I’d say this is version 3 for U2. Albums Boy thru War = #1 (raw, post-punk sound). The Unforgettable Fire thru Rattle & Hum = #2 (more atmospheric soundscapes & exploration of American rhythm-&-blues sounds). This song is from their version #3 period of Achtung Baby thru Pop albums (more experimental, industrial/techno sounds). Of course, they evolve again after that. But I’m basically agreeing with you. And, yes, U2 are stellar live. Best concert experience I’ve ever been to.

U2 is a very successfully commercial band. Sunday Bloody Sunday and Where the Street Have no Name are my Favorite! In one of their tour, they had a heart shaped stage, with people sitting/standing in the heart (as it was only the outline of the heart). This was my best friend's favorite band, I liked them, nothing more. But the concert ticket price were very high... Orphan Black is a SICK show.

I bought this album in 1992 and only listened to the 3 radio hits (Even Better than The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways and One) without knowing I’d listen to the whole album. A week later, this song was the 5th one in and by the time I got to it, I knew this would be one of the best albums of all time. This particular song is very raw while being inadvertently refined. The sound is such a departure for them, but it caught lightning in a bottle. The emotion in the song is incredible; truly better than the sum of its parts.

The song Lemon was on their next album. I think that was called Zooropa. I remember going to a concert at the MCG in either 1992 or 93 and they played that song that night. Oddly, I do not listen to this Achtung Baby album much now but it was a great album to listen to in the early 1990's. Looking back now, 1990's seems like a very uninteresting decade of music but the two albums I played most in that decade would have been Achtung Baby by U2 and Blood Sugar Sex Majik by Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They made what was an otherwise, forgettable music decade, have some sensational peaks with those two albums.

I think the best approach to diving into their music is to stick with one album at a time and flesh them out. Even though they have distinct aspects or trademarks of their music that flows through each album like the drums, Bono's voice and the Edge's guitar, each album is an evolution in sound and story telling on a different level with no fear of experimenting and exploring their talents while challenging the listeners interpretation of lyrics. U2 are masters of encrypting spiritual messages within the imagery of their lyrics. Very few people know this or understand this. Bono knows what I know and I know what Bono knows. I have listened to his testimonies and interviews which confirm the veiled spiritual messages within his songs. I have decrypted the symbolism in many of his songs because we speak and understand the same language. U2 is awake and knows who we are, why we are here and gears his messages to those who are also awake and know the same thing. He is not the only artist who does this but he is the only one who does it for the right reason. Sorry this sounds so cryptic to the rest of you but it truly is a supernatural spiritual gift he has and shares it with the rest of us who who understand his imagery and messages. When most people are associating the messages to a standard earthly event or situation like a relationship, romance, break-up, war, struggle, personal journey, abuse, overcoming, positivity etc... there is a whole other meaning to many of his songs. Anyway, just a suggestion so everyone can follow the evolution of their music sound, more closely and organized. It makes the transition to their evolution in sound easier to follow rather than jumping back and forth in time like other channels do. It just gets messy that way in my opinion. Or at least play 4-5 songs from each album if that works better. Keep up the good work. Glad to see how others realize how timeless and unique their music is.

If U2 died in 2000ish, they would be viewed so differently than they are now. They were so good. Brilliant in the studio. Even better live. I would put their work from Boy(1980) through Pop(1997) up against any band not named the Beatles or Led Zeppelin. The most impressive part of it was over that 17 years, they completely changed their sound 3 times so thoroughly if someone knew nothing about them, most casual listeners wouldn’t even realize it’s the same band. In a weird way, with them its kinda the opposite dynamic which exists with artists/public figures like Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, JFK, RFK, James Dean, etc. Those people all tragically died at/near their peak. Frozen in time in everyone’s mind. Whilst they all were deserving of the contemporary praise they received, their legend tends to outgrow their reality(e.g. James Dean was only ever in 3 movies… yet people talk about him like he’s one of the greatest actors ever). Whereas with U2 we’ve witnessed the decline. We’ve witnessed them become the caricature of themselves. We’ve witnessed the divisive political/social issues. Therefore the negative current perception really drags down the reality of how great they actually were.
