Luna now switches between Native and DSP if you have the plugins. Committing to printing on the way in is a doubled edged sword which has benefits and negatives.
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that feature rocks I think it’s super handy, as far as committing plug-ins goes… I think it’s important to always commit your preamp Sound, this is just the way it is in real life. If you were working in a pro studio, gentle EQ moves are OK, but huge carving moves is not advised nor is committing compression… Unless it’s part of the creative sound, it’s super common for guitar players to use compression as part of their tone so in that case it’s cool.

@@TheSteveKinney Of course! I just upgraded to an apollo twin x (first time using Universal Audio) and setup my vocal chain on the UAD console. I'm getting the signals sent to my headphones perfectly and a signal logic but when I listen back to the logic recording the vocals are dry with zero of the effects loaded on my channel strips on the console board. Did i miss something with the setup to link this? Is this a common error among setup for beginners?
@TheSteveKinney

@@zanechristophermusic glad to hear! Congrats! You will always wonder why you never jumped to UAD sooner. Lol To answer your question. Yup, Common simple fix. Inside of console - near the monitoring meter - click UAD Rec. this allows you to capture all the processed signal from the inserts. You can also capture the Aux channels as well - if you have a reverb, delay, etc on that. Add a stereo track in logic - choose the corresponding channel for the aux. if your not sure - go to console settings and review the I/o matrix. It’s specific to each class of devices, so it’s different than my x8, than the twin or the Solo. Hope that makes sense! Cheers!

On another of your videos, I mentioned I was getting the Apollo Solo. The bad thing is the standalone Apollo Solo is discontinued (here), and now I can only get the Solo Heritage Edition ($200 more expensive). Since shipping from the US is out of the question (would end up paying almost the price x2). My feeling was that if I'm going to spring up $200, I might as well spring up a little more and get the Twin DUO, but there is an issue: The Twin needs to be plugged in at all times when recording. In my (third world) town, power is very unstable and the house connections have all sorts of issues. Whenever I record on my laptop, I have to unplug the fridge AND the laptop, so there is no noise on the signal 😂. This means I would probably have to invest in a surge protector/regulator if I want to get the TWIN and that would mean I'm spending about $1300 instead of $900 for Solo Heritage Edition (taking import taxes into account, ALL electronics are more expensive outside the US). So, in that regard specifically, I see the TB3-powered SOLO as a winner. The DSP limitations stress me out, but ultimately, I think I can make it work, even if it means committing to stuff early on. I just feel like buying the Heritage edition is giving me a bunch of plugins I can't even use freely given the DSP limitations... Do you think it's still worth it? Or for that price, should I just spring up for the Twin? (sorry for the long post)
@TheSteveKinney

Thank you for the great question! Firstly, it’s important to note that - having the solo myself - I do commit a lot on the way in. Especially when I’m working with guitar sounds and bass sounds. I still practice this with my x8 as well too. So even with a lot of DSP capability - I commit early. That said - I get your plight. Either way - I’d try to pick up some sort of power condition for sure. Something like the Furman SS-6b is a cheap example. Of course - I’m sure you’d have to find something like this for your areas connectors. Now on to the bigger point - for the solo - you always can look to the used market for Arrows or solo’s. Sometimes you can find a good deal. This avoids the extra cost for the heritage edition and you still can get the standard plugins that come with it. Alternatively - the heritage plugins are great. I use the 1176, La2a, oxide, pure plate, V76 pre - almost daily lol and those you’d likely have to buy in different bundle packs anyways. Tough choice though. That said - specifically because of the power issues - I feel you’d be making a smart choice in the solo for the clean power. Just make sure your computer has TB3. Cheers Mercedes! Hope all is well.

Here's a cool tip...get the quad core or better and don't try to cut corners because you'll live to regret it...ESPECIALLY if you're recording at anything over 24-48. I get the printing with effects to save resources but...man....It's a joke to get into this with a duo unless you just want a pre emulation and that's it from UAD. I'm SOOOO glad I had a bunch of other folks give me a stern warning on how they learned this the hard way before I finally just decided to pop on the quad..and even still...I'm having to work around some stuff....looking at an octo satillite set up. It's really not worth the couple hundred bucks...just accept it..eat it...besides..most people have been using cracked plugs for years anyway...consider if your dues. LOL. OR...get a GREAT interface for cheap and do Plugin Alliance that runs on your computers CPU. Having said that...GREAT video...and well informed. Congrats.

Solid opinion. And thanks for the comment and kind words! 🙏🏻 I personally have a twin x, and an x8, plenty of DSP. I use the solo specifically when I travel to satellite locations for tracking. Gives me the pres and high quality AD/DA without having to unplug my twin and travel with a power supply. So as a professional - it kind of opened up my eyes to what you really can do with it. I’m actually in the process of building a song expressly with the solo from start to finish on Luna! Pretty cool challenge. Hey, thanks so much for the comment & support! That's a great question! I don't have adobe Audition, I could maybe look into getting it or running a trial. However, that being said, it seems like your buffer might be set too low. Which would likely be a setting within the program itself. You may also try increasing the PlugIn Delay Compensation inside of your UAD console software. That's likely what's going on there. Play around with it, and comment back if you don't get it figured out. In the mean time, I'll see what I can do about picking up Adobe Audition. Cheers!

@@DANEOSEVEN541 sure - so. 1. Think of console as a real world physical controller of what’s happening inside of your Apollo. 2. Absolutely, The setup that I created was simply to retain the ability to monitor the FX on the fly, and print at the same time. Either way, you'd need the primary source track, a bus/fx track, then a new audio track that receives the input from the bus/fx track. To do that, you need to create another bus oddly enough.

Hey Steve, just a question about "legacy". Some of peoples saying, in quality the legacy is not the same, like the "normal" plugin...
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney 2 жыл бұрын
This is the case, but quality is probably not a great term. So. They are the earlier modeling codes. Basically, most of the time, they modeled the devices functional characteristics, but not really the nonlinearities of their distortions etc. So to clarify more simply. The 1176 legacy - they model the way the 1176 compresses, its attack & release characteristics etc - but they don’t model the input/output transformers or distortion characteristics. Many of the “legacy” plugins were UAD-1 ... now we are at UAD-2. I believe at the time, the technology just wasn’t there to implement those extra modeling points. Now it is. 😎 Additionally, some of those also don’t have anti-aliasing filters too. There is a big article on that on sound on sound. Very interesting read. My take: I use the legacy plugs a lot on sounds that are in the background like - BGV’s etc. saves a lot on DSP and those extra characteristics, while it’s awesome to have, isn’t always needed for something that isn’t really front and center focus. I’ll also use them for monitoring during tracking, while I have a big session, again. Saves on DSP and gives the singer or musician some vibe without taking resources from the project. Etc. That said, there is a night and day difference between the newer modeled versions a lot of times, once you do start to try and get those nuances out of the plugins. Hope this helps. Cheers!

But if you were able to a/b swap between the two - you’d hear the “punch” of the mix slightly different. Which is obviously not really practical in any normal situation. Whenever I used both device, I was stoked and didn’t really affect me - but when I did tests between the two back to back - that’s what I noticed. If I had to have my pick - obviously I’d be going after the twin because of the I/o and extra DSP but if I just needed something to output sound at a pro level - I could take either.

Hey Richie, thanks for the support and the question. Great question! So it should be the same process. In logic - right click on the track you want to bounce in place and choose the bounce in place option. If it’s a mono track it will preserve the mono characteristics. In a different video I touch on your second question. From what I have come to understand - legacy versions don’t include the modeling of the input and output transformers in the signal path. Hope this helps! Cheers, Steve

You have the right idea - logic is the only confusing bit because of the way it I/o’s You have the right idea - take the output of the effect bus and route it as an input to the new audio track and hit record! The way logic does it - In very specific scenarios is to create two busses which is dumb lol Luna is way easier - as I assume pro tools is. And if you are using plugins on an aux channel in console - you can use that to record into your daw in real-time as well - by adding a stereo audio track and choosing the corresponding input from console. You can find this in the I/o matrix in UAD console. Cheers! Hope this helps!

In a nutshell... 1. Commit to your “preamp” plugins by recording the sound to wav. 2. “Print” or “record” your reverbs to wav once you’ve dialed in the source material. The message "UAD DSP LIMIT EXCEEDED" refers only to the processes with plugins that are happening inside the UAD interface. So, no matter what someone would do inside the DAW (bouncing, process tracks on buses etc), that message would appear anyway, because it's a limitation of the interface. Bottom line, if you do any "trick" inside the DAW, still, you won't be able to load more UAD plugins inside the interface. Right?....:)

Will I have any latency issues? I see lots of other people taking theirs back, or reselling.
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney 3 жыл бұрын
@@poeticgeenetikstv4672 depends on how you do your monitoring. Latency will always eventually become an issue IF and a big if - you are monitoring through plugins within the Daw. This is because as your session grows and kore plugins are added, the signals have to be sent to your computers daw - processed (along with all the other tracks) - then sent back out to your headphones or monitors. No interface can solve this problem, WITHOUT hardware processing. This is actually where the Apollo’s Excell the most. And one of the biggest advantages. They offer hardware monitoring. So your signal is sent to your daw to be recorded and simultaneously sent out to your headphones for monitoring while also being able to handle any processing, like compression and EQ in real-time - of course this would be via the modeled UAD plugins. And the best part for you - is that - can apply the UAD processing without recording the processing. So you can get the vibe you want in your monitor mix, but still be free to keep the unaltered clean signal once you hit record for processing later. the UA interfaces really are some next level stuff. Most that return - either need something so specific or they didn’t understand how to use it for what they needed. And I’ll admit, it’s a bit overwhelming at first. Once you really harness it though - you’d never wanna go back. Hope that helps. Cheers brotha!

The solution is simple, but it is up to UAD, and they won't do it because they want to sell more hardware: UAD plugins only used inside the DAW, should not be linked to the hardware DSP. My CPU is more than capable to deal with them with ease. UAD needs to decouple them from the interface once they are used in the DAW.
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there my dude, thanks so much for your he comment! Totally see where you’re coming from. And for the most part, I think you’re actually thinking like UA right now, see I think what your point about decoupling them in the DAW - I think that’s the point of Luna and will eventually be implemented. That being said - I’d be careful to think that the computer CPU could handle a ton of plugins. The thing is - the architecture is totally different than normal CPU instructions. And on top of that - you’re computer is rendering the interface, reading/writing to the system drives, etc. and because of this, this is where the latency comes in. And for this reason, this is 1000% percent why they have their own DSP on the device. So that you can monitor, record with no latency. Pretty damn cool. And even pro tools has now jumped on board with what UAD has done. They ripped off the Apollo designs with their new product ProTools Carbon. Hopefully that gives some more insight! Keep on rock mate. 💪🏻 cheers!

@@TheSteveKinney That is really weird answer. I own an Apollo, I know how it works, and I know UAD isn't releasing Luna on PC, but are selling plugins and hardware for PC. The way the code is written, is to make a closed system, like Apple does. There is not 1 reason that it wouldn't be possible to decouple the plugins from the DSP hardware. It is a deliberate choice from UAD, so they can push you to buy more hardware (like their overpriced Satellites). SharC DSP's are used in many effect pedals and effect units for example. My Strymon pedals aren't more powerfull than the CPU in my PC lol. Ofcourse the CPU matters for running plugins. I never said they didn't. But Intel and AMD have extremely powerfull high-end CPU's, which are more powerfull than any SharC DSP. It's the code in the case of UAD that blocks plugins being used by Intel and AMD cpu's. It is deliberate, so that they can create a closed system, like Apple. That is also the reason they won't release Luna on PC. It's a business model. That's it. Just like Garage Band is exclusive to Mac. It's a business model. Other plugin designers create more complex plugins than UAD and are coded for PC and Mac. Just to be clear: UAD makes great hardware and plugins. Just don't be fooled by the business model.
