Michael Fried: About the Tableau

Some remarks about the history of the concept of the tableau from early C18 to the present. The basic claim is that right form the start it was a concept that implied a particular relation to the beholder, that is, to issues of theatricality and anti-theatricality. And that those issues are alive to this moment in photography and video.

Fascinating subject. Next time I would prefer an improptu talk that draws more on his natural interest in the material. Details and quotes are for the written word. Also the venue really needs to adjust the podium height for tall people.
