i am engineering an affordable VTOL UAV without experience for drone swarms capable of advanced missions. today we are going in to the conceptual design of a VTOL UAV, for which i will be reading the book simplified aircraft design for homebuilders. i will be following up and talking about some things i have learnt from this book by reymer about conceptual aircraft design. We will also get a better understanding of batteries, and we can figure out what type of battery is best for a VTOL UAV, LiPo or Lithium Ion?
If you read this, i dont have a patreon yet. if you think i should, comment it that i should, cuz im not sure if people would actually want to donate to this project yet.
If you want to help me out, you can send me an email at: Siep.vonk@gmail.com

One thing you need to know about air craft, you want the center of lift to be as close to the center of mass of possible, and with center of thrust, it should be going through the center of mass. One piece of advice is only turning the thrust and not the wings with the thrust for VTOL mode (I assume you may add) (Both opposite and same turning) . As the wings are uneven, they may push the drone forwards or backwards, depending on the longer wing, Instead, turning the thrust will not move the aircraft forward or back. The reason for this is if you are going upwards in VTOL mode with wings and thrust turned upwards, it will get moved because, its a wing, it provides lift, going upwards in such mode will use lift. The reason this is a huge issue is that this is going to be fast, and the reason this doesn't happen on planes, is that, they stall, and all lift is lost. You may need thrust on wings. This may need to be a VTOL considering this is currently a plane, and it is much easier to be in the air, delivering packages, then landing and leaving. Considering ground targets, (As your Drone may be), are easier to target than flying controllable targets. This is because of its operations (delivery in harmful areas. You may need to add an FPV camera in real life, and make the receiver mostly concealed, as it is your only form of vision, but it needs to emit waves. Same with the Control receiver.

You’re right. I’m thinking of dropping the packages whilst I’m horizontal flight, with a parachute. If I can accurately predict where it would land with some calculations on wind, the drones speed, height, more stuff, and a lot of testing. It will still have vtol though, so it’s always possible to fly still instead, it’s just taking more energy. And I’m probably not going to move the wings because you’re right on that, I hadn’t thought of that.

Battery simple.... Lipo batteries are good for high amp fast applications like flying aerobatics. Lithium ion can discharge at a higher rate by using two of them in parallel. Lithium ion lasts longer at half the weight. And they don't explode if you crash them or mishandle them as easy. You want lithium ion. Fly longer, less risk, less weight.

Wish I could help anyway but I got nothin special though thing I would keep in mind is that the more complex something is more possibility it can break down, so it might be a good idea to not make it super complex

That’s the only thing I thought of on day one that is still valid lol. All my other ideas were wrong

very good video but your videos have a few problems 1. no video chapters/sections, it would be much nicer to watch with me knowing when what part ends or skipping a certain process you have and if planned correctly shouldn't take up to much time. 2. a bit more branding like changin your windows wallpaper to your pfp 3. way to many parts where nothing happens, if these parts where removed it would make the vid about 2-3 minutes shorter wich not only helps with people even clicking on the video but also with people clicking off of the video 4. simmilar to 3 but a lot of things can be said shorter or done faster or some things are unnecisary not all the things shown we need to see or get explained in some cases it would help to ff the building process in fyout and give explanations on what you did to some parts while flying

The chapters / sections I indeed forgot to add, I was rushing for the vid to be online as it’s quite hard to make such vids and do work in a single week. I am currently not doing too much branding yet, mainly because I’ve only started recently and I haven’t gotten time to properly do so yet. About the boring parts of the video, I am truly trying to find how to make these videos good. On one end my viewers are slightly older than what I used to so I felt like everything had to go a little slower. On the other hand it is hard to make everything being said perfectly at this stage because I am new to like editing daily and not using very intensive voice overs. And then besides those points, I leave a lot of “less interesting parts” in because it is realistic, which is the goal of this series. A realistic look. Yes some things can be said quicker, which is what I’m definitely trying to work on!

The wings in the front need to have a greater angle of attack than the rear wing so that it has more lift as the speed increases, and less as the speed decreases. What you want is for the front to fall when plane is going too slow so that the plane speeds up. As is speeds up the front gains more lift causing the plane to aim upwards slowing it down.

1C = The battery is charged or discharged in 1 hour. 2C = 1/2 hours, 30 minutes. 120C = 1/120 hours, 1/2 seconds.

thunderpowerrc sells batteries that can be charged at 12C. That’s 5 minutes. I bought 3 of them and could charge them faster than I could use them.

@@NaeviusUAVsame as you, but building stuff, made 2 normal 500mm drones in 3 days, broke 6 propellers so far. I do not have motors for it, made flight controllers from ESP32, have plenty of drives and 6 of 6S 33000 mAH batteries, new in a box! 😃

If you look at tiny plane records like the bumble bee you will see that your goals are very low compared to what is possible. These planes used Lawnn mower engines to carry an adult so about 70-80kg payload with a 2m wingspan or less and a range of 100 miles per gallon. This gives you a wing loading of close to 10kg per 1HP. Trading the gas for electric means you will trade some payload to offset the reduced energy density of batteries. 500km should easily be possible with a 1hp electric motor. The Russian orlan drone is about the size of what you are building and has
