Why should Uber, for example, not pay drivers with higher ratings or cleaner and newer cars or more willingness to work the graveyard hours more than the opposite even outside of graveyard hours. The only discrimination that I would think is bad as unethical is if drivers were Uber knows that they are in a financially tight situation are paid less because Uber knows that they have less bargaining power.

I agree. The problem is that they don't tell us why the algorithm pays some drivers more than others. We can only guess.

Transparency is all I ask from ALL the apps (businesses as well). Also I don't think the apps care about the condition of the cars or appearance of the drivers anymore. Just as long as the rides get taken. 👏👍👍✌

Excellent points Levi… first and foremost I think these companies need to be more transparent and forthcoming about their business and wages… but I don’t know if government intervention is necessary either… only did 13 Uber X trips this past week here at the Jersey Shore in the Monmouth and Ocean county area ( part-time driver) and was online for 8 hours and 9 minutes… I made $145.24… it’s roughly 18 per hour without expenses… when you figure in the expenses ( gas and wear and tear on your car)… it’s probably closer to approximately 15 dollars per hour!… when I first started there was still bonuses and some surge pay but that is gone now here at my location… bonuses are gone and it’s a very uncommon to see any surge pay now!… in my humble opinion I don’t think it’s worth it any longer and the past few months I been doing more food deliveries ( grub hub , door dash) which pays around the same 18 per hour roughly and 80/90 percent of my customers tip opposite rideshare where only about 20/25 percent of people tip!!.. in any event keep safe there upstate and thank you for all you do. Tom

Government regulation for rideshare worked in NYC, drivers there arguably make more than any other city in the world. This does however come with some issues, high cost of insurance, a lot of competition, long waitlists to join, many restrictions.

Also the cost to take an Uber/Lyft in nyc is very high for passengers

If NYC drivers make so much, why do they rent houses out and drive in Syracuse 4 hours away?

@@tipyouintheapp Who is doing that? You’re saying people who are approved to drive in nyc (5 Burroughs) commute all the way to Syracuse to drive for Uber?

@ZavHustles3 ай бұрын
@@tipyouintheapp Ya, there’s no way that’s a thing. Im in a discord with a bunch of nyc drivers and they all show their numbers and no way would anyone leave that to go do Syracuse. I also asked the discord if they’ve ever heard of that happened and their response was “why would anyone do that” either you’re mistaken about something or the drivers you met aren’t the brightest, to put it nicely

Interesting video. I still believe that the driver should get 75% of the fare because it’s our vehicle which we have expenses to maintain.
@tipyouintheapp3 ай бұрын
I wish we got 99% of the fare.
@DeliveringTrends3 ай бұрын
I get the concept except I still think Uber will take advantage of drivers through the driver’s expense even if that means taking over 70%, or all “gig” apps for that matter. Uber has ever been intended to be a full service operation. It’s always been about how can Uber not (least ever) accept responsibility. They kind of unfortunately priced it in a way where it’s if your rich you get richer and poor you get poorer.

How is it possible for 2 drivers to be offered the exact same ride? The request "market" is dynamic, even if a ride's details are an exact match the market is constantly changing in ways that effect supply & demand.

I don't know.
@rimcox888623 күн бұрын
@@tipyouintheapp but you believe it to be true? I don't see enough detail in the video you're responding to to make an assessment. I would need to see a request going to multiple drivers at the exact same time for the conclusions to be valid; maybe I missed something in the video.

I'm curious if Uber is wanting to make sure I don't drop below a certain hourly rate? Because when I pay no attention and just take every ride and simply drive for a whole week compared to when I'm more attuned to what rides I take, I always end up pretty much in the same spot. So I think maybe Uber is looking at your past few rides and saying that you're behind what you should be earning and maybe then you're getting boosted a little? Just a thought?

I think they use the algorithm to manage many things like that to entice you to take a trip.

You say there is no rhyme or reason... But there is very precise rhyme and reason. People keep thinking like a customer makes an order and then the company takes a cut and then sends out the remainder to the drivers as an offer. The reality is the company has an AI model for each driver and customer which is consistently optimizing the amount of money the company keeps on each side of the transaction. You train the model with your actions. People who take lower offers will get lower offers. The other thing is that there seems to always be drivers willing to take lower and lower offers. Why would the company pay Jim 2 bucks a mile while Joe will do it for 1.50? That doesn't make much sense at all. So now Jim either adapts or doesn't drive. In my city the taxi rates are actually legislated by the city. You have to pay a $5 dollar pickup fee, $1.65 for distance, and a time rate that works out to roughly 40 bucks an hour. If food delivery companies were bound by that they would instantly go out of business because no one would pay 20 bucks to have a happy meal delivered. The real problem is that there just aren't enough dollars involved in most orders to cover the delivery of time sensitive low value items. Some of them solve this with a small order fee but most just seem to screw over drivers with punishments for low acceptance, or flat out just turning off drivers that drop orders that end up being ridiculous.

I think there is a rhyme or reason, I just don't know what it is. 😂
@Snerdles3 ай бұрын
@@tipyouintheapp That's just because the model is individualized. That's why when people compare it seemingly doesn't make sense because it looks inconsistent. The recent video showing different offers to different people only shows that different people get different offers. You could call that discrimination but only in a way that every single choice you make when interacting with other people is technically discrimination. If you went for beers with Joe on Friday, did you technically discriminate against jim... Sure. That's the very essence of choice, the ability to discriminate between options. Looking at it from the perspective of the company if an order comes in and you have a few drivers online and you offer it to three or four of them who all decline it for various reasons and now it's down to Jim and Joe and you have data to suggest that Jim should accept this offer at 10 dollars, and Joe will for 9... Why would you ever offer them the same amount of money? If you really want them to accept you'd send Joe a 9.50 offer and if they decline then send Jim an 11 dollar offer because they are the only person left and the order needs to get done. This is also one of the primary reasons that Doordash hides a portion of the tips on any decent order. The AI is training itself (and psychologically manipulating the driver) to understand and manipulate just where the line is for each driver to get them to do stuff.

Oh I just thought of a great one. Not everybody gets the same price on insurance. If you're driving and accident record is poor, it probably costs more for insurance and you'll get paid less? I better be getting better insurance rates driving a Tesla which is much safer! Insurance is a large part of the riders cost. And by the way, I have a feeling the real profits are being had by the insurance companies!

Uber and Lyft will never change because their business model is counter intuitive to driver needs. What they focus on is driver supply and passenger demand. If someone is willing to be paid at 20 cents a mile why change? I don't want the government involved, but some regulation is needed to set a standard. And good just self regulation (for drivers pay) is not Uber or Lyft's forte.

Self regulation. I love it! ❤️

I have to disagree with you on this one. Price variability cannot be compared to wage variability.. especially when it’s the same request, with the customer paying the same price and the variable being the percentage Uber decides to take on that specific ride.
