DLC coating stands for Diamond Like Carbon coating, for future reference. It is a Carbon coating, which has diamond like properties in sense of hardness and brittleness of the stuff, but is in every other way different than diamond. It is industrially "grown", and has different atom arrangement.

You can install faces yourself now but it's a bit tricky a first timer. You need to install huawei mobile services, a beta version of the health app, and download a compatible face. XDA has a few pages on it but you need to install the health app and services in a bit of an awkward way that won't work on huawei phones but works on Samsung (and probably other phones that don't have huawei mobile services preinstalled).

very good question: i guess from the free Huawei health app available from the Google store for android devices - we did/could not test/try it in a limited time demo session, so it is a guess - so do not take my word for granted until we have the solid confirmation from Huawei and/or the final product review unit to make a correct assessment on our side (aka the Ubergizmo review team)

to my knowledge, (99% sure) you do not get the Watch GT with the Huawei mate 20 or the mate 20 pro out of the box, however, Huawei might decide to make some bundle deals in the future in some markets but there was absolutely no word on that during the private demo session we attended - as for the band, we did not have time to cover that during the session - i ll ask

Yeah you get this free if you preordered in the UK and have submitted your proof of purchase to Huawei consumables. (Quick Google will guide you) I think you have a limited time to do this so act quickly

Well if you pre order the huawei mate 20 pro before the 26th oct 2018 you get the gt watch plus wireless huawei charging pad for free from vodafone or most networks plus simfree pre order for £899 for the handset from carphonewarehouse you also get both items free aswell. The processor and ram are very low end. Cortex-M4 chipset and runs the LiteOS,a the homegrown OS of Huawei. It has 128 MB of storage space enough for its OS as well as other additional features and with 16 MB of RAM. Now we know how the watch gets the crazy good battery life. Save your money folks.

I have heard apps are not available, could you let us know how notifications will be handled and if there is a Map that can be used for navigation with the improved GPS?

There was no demo of call/message notifications or messages during the session, as you can see the message screen reads "no message". When I asked the map question it was made clear by Peter Gauden that, although your location is tracked with the built-in GPS, you cannot follow your location on a map app on the watch, there is no map app on the GT. The only thing he confirmed: you will be able to see your recorded location during your run or bicycle or swimming session outdoors inside the Huawei Health application on your smartphone (listen to the end of the sport mode demo in the video, min 5:07). According to Peter Gauden from Huawei, you will be able to see the map that you have run inside the Huawei Health app on your phone - he did not mention if the built-in GPS could be connected to your phone to navigate on the main map app on Android or iPhone. I will re-check now to make sure what exactly you can do with the built-in GPS.

thanks for the fast and detailed answer! the "no message" screen could indicate an sms connection as well - its hard for me to imagine huawei would go without whatsapp and other chat apps being integrated in their software, i really hope it is able to do this. Thanks for checking again for the GPS functionality! I would love to learn more about the considerations they had for going with their own OS and trimming it down this much. Is it possible (/likely) for huawei to deliver major software updates to add entire apps or support for functionality? If it is able to provide navigation and messages this watch is a buy for me, sadly if either of those is not available i will have to pass as it loses lots of functionality for me with these features (checking a map while your on a bike is a bad idea dont do that ^^)

@@geniumme2502 at launch time (which is different from market release) : it looks like Huawei is still working on the software -> there was no notifications for whatsapp or any third party top messaging app such as Facebook messenger - the only confirmed messaging notification we have to date is for the sms messaging app and the phone calls - that does not mean the GT will not have it in some markets when the final product will be available or down the road. But, it is not yet implemented from what we saw during the session on the pre-production unit and when we asked the question over email a few days later. Apologies for the delayed reply we are overwhelmed and busy with all the new smartphone/devices/laptops launches in the past few weeks. thanks for the question and the feedback.

I am a fan of Huawei phone, i have bought a few different types of smart watches but always have compatibility problem, that's why i am going to give this a try. I wonder WhatsApp, WeChat notification works on this watch?

To my knowledge, for now there is only sms notification for sure no Whatsapp notifications - for WeChat I am not sure. I have the review unit here since a few days but we are backlogged with briefings and other devices to review. When I asked the question: Notifications for third party apps on the watch: many people ask if the GT can display notifications for WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and all the top messaging applications directly on the watch? Official answer from Huawei: It supports mobile phone auxiliary functions such as incoming call reminders, information reminders (SMS, e-mail, calendar, social applications) and so on. My take on it: the Huawei Watch GT does not support any third party messaging mobile application for now, the Huawei development team may be working on it, but the manufacturer does not want to officially say it is not supporting yet at release time, because they may add the feature in the future. The term "social applications" is very vague, and so I am assuming there is no support for messaging apps other than regular sms & email, today.

Samsung and Apple watch have a wide range of apps, Fitbit seems to have stopped developing somehow and according to the information (at that time) the huawei watch GT won't have further apps. From my perspective the navigation on the watch looks a bit laggy as well. Have fun

I'm guessing there's no speaker, no real texting, calling functionality and a watch so close to release being this laggy makes me question the end result. That and they're giving it away free with a a smartphone. I had high hopes and was hoping for a companion for my P20 Pro but this isn't it. I guess the Honor watch will use the same hardware and laggy software so I guess that one is out too. Their previous watch is looking better than this and less of a feature downgrade. Sorry Huawei you've done some amazing things this year.. for me this isn't one of them.

Or you could buy Huawei Honor Band 4 for 30-34 dollars and have 95% functionality for a fraction of the price. Works great, only functionallity difference it that it doesnt have its standalone GPS, but uses one from your phone that is in your pocket... dont waste your money

yes there is a lag, you can see it in the video. it is not a review> we had too limited time for that - that guy is the Huawei product spokesperson, not a Ubergizmo team member (written in the frame at the beginning) and he is just giving a walk through the specs hence the title "overview' not review. We are not comfortable speaking on camera since we are writers (check out our smartphone and laptops written reviews), so we ask the product managers to show the key features of new devices. Most people find this informative. Thanks for the feedback.
