Our Usada dining forum welcomes the writer and longtime Ubud resident Diana Darling to share her observations on the rapid changes Ubud has undergone over the past 40 years. She will present a historical overview of tourism in Ubud since the early 20th century, and discuss events and personalities that have shaped what Ubud has become today. Topics include the dilemma of cultural tourism and what it was trying to protect; the rise of touristic culture, and the dangers of post-cultural tourism.
Following her presentation will be an open discussion with emphasis on the following points:
- What kind of tourism is appropriate for Ubud?
- What economic alternatives?
- What solutions for inadequate management, governance?
Diana Darling is a freelance writer and editor who has lived in Bali since 1980. She is the author of The Painted Alphabet: a novel based on a Balinese tale and a former editor-in-chief of Latitudes magazine, and has published numerous essays on Balinese society. She recently translated Bali, 50 Years of Changes: Conversations with Jean Couteau, from French to English. Diana was born in the United States and moved to Europe in 1973, where she lived in Italy and Paris carrying out independent work as a sculptor. She was formerly married to the late filmmaker John Darling, and since 1992 has been married to A.A. Alit Ardi of Ubud, where they live with their children and grandchildren.
