Recently I've discovered your channel. Love the way you make everything so easy even the lvm videos that I've no previuos knowledge and IT seemed like a walk in the park as you explained. Kudos and keep doing it just like this.

Great walkthrough, thanks Jay! My only surprise was that you did not mention the encryption option for the installation, this seems like an important security feature of a server so I would have expected even a brief explanation of that. All the same, thanks again.

Thanks for your video! Can anyone explain how to set up static IP during installation (not after installation). Maybe its just me but, installation script just keeps loosing Gateway and duplicete DNS servers.

Thanks for another great video. This video confirms an odd behavior change I have seen with the installer for Ubuntu 22.04 Server. The installer now defaults to using only half of the available drive space when it sets up the file system (shown at 11:14). Not sure if this is intended or a bug, but it bit me on a recent install, where I ended up running out of space on the volume before I noticed the issue. I confirmed the Ubuntu Server 22.04.1 installer still has the same behavior.

I have that issue as well and it's pretty annoying

That sounds like if you didn’t select the right drive or that you didn’t allow the drive to overwrite the disk. I’ve probably been installing, upgrading or overwriting more than 50 servers since it was released, both virtual and bare metal and that has never happened. Actually today I did overwrite 4 old servers that had Rocky Linux 8 with encrypted disks. You just have as always be aware of what you’re doing

After some reading it seems to be the expected behavior, and just like you, it has made a lot of people upset. I'm very new to Linux, what I did was... on the screen you mentioned, under "USED DEVICES", I positioned on "ubuntu-lv new to be formatted as ext4" pressed "Enter">"edit" and typed the Max space available, save and continue with the process. Not sure if that is the correct way to do it. Like I mentioned, I'm very new to Linux.

@@skallen59 It has done this on every install I have done so far; they are all virtual machines with only one "blank" virtual disk attached, so I am quite certain I didn't select the wrong disk. If you look at 11:14 in the video, you will see that the installer has the same behavior for Jay; it is leaving half of the volume group as free space by default. You can change it from the defaults, of course, which I now do, but it is an unexpected change in behavior from the Ubuntu Server 20.04 installer, and the reasoning for the change isn't obvious to me.

11:15 Is Ubuntu Server not expanding the Logical volume to take up all the space in the volume group? It's something that bit me on 18.04, but I don't think happened on 20.04 (or I didn't pay close enough attention).
@tps1252 жыл бұрын
I don't believe this happened on 20.04. I don't remember it happening on 18.04, but I also don't think I was using LVM for very many of those installs.

Custom partition is a better option. My first glance at your book defaults to the same thing you showed on this video. It is not best practice. Still good though. Best to deep dive, rather than shallow.

Do you have a troubleshooting video? I can't seem to boot into the OS after installation. Without a network connection, the PC isn't finding a bookable drive. With network connection, the installer freezes or gets stuck in a loop.

Hello Jay, i have a question related to your book "Mastering Ubuntu Server". Previously i had bought 3-rd edition (based on ubuntu 20.04), but i didn't read it yet (yep, its sitting on bookshelf 🙂 ...). And now 4-rd edition of the book coming (based on ubuntu 22.04). Are you planning to potentially release video or blog post with comparison what changed / what was added in 4-rd edition (compared to material which was not present in 3-rd edition)? Thank you.
