It's really infuriating that it took these women suspecting something was wrong and caring enough to make one phone call to solve the case when the parole officers and other law enforcement officers who actually went to the house many times didn't suspect anything and failed to find Jaycee and her daughters. The parole officers didn't do proper home inspections and a deputy sheriff didn't even bother to check the back yard when it was reported by a neighbor that there were girls living back there! These women are the true hero's of the rescue of Jaycee and her daughters. It's really sickening that the parole department dropped the ball for 18 years and then tried to take credit for solving the case by following up on the information these women gave them.

@Claire Vittore I would have to agree with you, If I was a parole officer, and If I see something that doesn't look right, I would tell the Parolee that I was visiting, like, "All Right I'll write it down on my report, I'll call you to schedule a next visit", and I would walk out the door, and drove off, The Next Day I would be making a surprise visit, but I wouldn't be coming alone, I would have some police officers, they would secretly get in the house, get them out of there, and put the handcuffs on the parolee and that'll be it.

I can't believe that parole officers visited Garrido's house 60 times and never fully checked the whole property. If they did they would have found the hidden backyard and Jaycee would have been freed much sooner. I'm grateful for the common sense of these two wonderful female police officers, and thank goodness Jaycee is now happily enjoying freedom with family and friends and living a productive life. It's so tragic what she had to endure for 18 years.

I would have to agree with you, also I think that there should be stronger, longer, harder, harsher, tougher laws to protect children against these child predators and pedophiles, also longer, harder, prison terms to keep them in prison, so that no child won't go through the H*** that This Young Lady and her girls, and all the other kidnapped children had gone through, also There should be Stronger Neighborhood watches in every neighborhood, so if someone see's something or someone out of place, that person would call another person, that person would call another person, that person would call another person, that person would call the Parents, the Parents would get their children inside the house, doors locked or bolted, and the children would go to a safe place in the house, The Parents would call the police, a police officer would arrive, and talk to the person that's driving, also there should be Stranger Danger Classes in every single school district, I think that it'll be a great after school activity, that way Children would learn what to do if a Stranger should approach them, Children would learn what to do if a Stranger should approach them, Like, Finding their lost dog, or offering them money and a Job, etc. etc. and they should also learn to scream, yell, make a lot of noise to get attention, also If kids are walking by themselves, they should walk with other kids, because we all know the old saying, "There's Safety in Numbers".

He was sentenced to 50 years and got out after 11 years. The Parole board failed miserably too. 60 visits to his house. They saw everything in the backyard and even met Jaycee ffs. I work in the justice system. Studies have been done to show that judges and police officers are not any better at judging character than the average person. I think what happened here was much flakier than good cop judgment. I expect the eye rolls for saying this but I think it came down to women's intuition that led these officers to investigate further.

The real blame lies with the parole officers there should have been policy set and confirmation required that his home was searched without notice randomly. IMO sex offenders should never even get parole, but the fact that he had it supposed to be under strict supervision without any right to refuse a search of his home or personal things. They knew who he was and what he had done the other officers called to his home while they should have done further checking found his parole, they failed to do that they didn't know about him. Hopefully this changed the system in all states.

Had a UC Berkeley police trainee in my academy years ago, he's been with SFPD for many years. The officer couldn't do anything because during the meeting there was no crime. When the officer told the parole agent he came in with his "kids" and the PA told her he didn't have kids, my heart sunk. I would also like to hear from the Parole Agent's as to why they didn't do a full search of the Garrido house, that's sheer laziness! A youtube video from probably 5 years ago in San Jose showed a man whose dog had been killed by San Jose PD while looking for a missing child. Those idiots never searched the basement where the baby was, they stated they searched the house, typical San Jose fools!

Rather than everyone just repeating 'women's intuition', It's important to recognize that the female cop who felt something was off, had decades of work with youth in her background and tons of experience knowing what 'normal' should be like. It's not like she was some random woman who had magic powers. Men are traditionally allowed to be more anti-social and insulated than women in society, which means they might have less direct experience in knowing how a normal teenage girl should behave. So, really this is a case of intuition that happened to come from a woman, it could've come from a man with a relevant history of experience. Although, men up to that point had failed and noticing a problem, they also didn't have the victims standing right next to the suspect. This story does encourage diversity in the police force and investment in bringing a wider range of experience to the field.

+ytubeanon The men involved in the case failed the victims so gravely that the State of California compensated Dugard with a $20 million settlement for their contribution to her continued captivity and abuse. Both the parole agents and the sheriff's office failed repeatedly to solve this case and release Dugard and her daughters from captivity, despite making frequent visits to the property, one of which following the tip that children were being held in the back yard (which the deputy sheriff then failed to inspect). A parole agent had one of the girls standing right in front of him in the home of a registered sex offender, yet failed to look into and verify her identity. These are grave oversights with real repercussion, but rather than talk about that, let's talk about how men are in theory capable of acting on intuition, when in reality they were not even capable of doing their jobs.

I read her book last night, start to finish. It was so hard to read, I almost couldn't do it. I had a really hard time with the kitten portion, the cats. I cannot fathom that The California Parole department gave themselves congratulations for this beautiful young lady returning home. I am happy that abc news set the story straight because I believe these two women deserve the gratitude. Thank you ladies for helping Jaycee (my new idol!) and her family!!! WONDERFUL job!

What a brave little girl who is now a woman who has 2 children and I understand why she did what she did no one know's how to live a normal life after this happened. I wouldn't be able to sleep. These brave women who have been through hell and back.

The first line failing here is that parole officers should be aware of ANYPLACE on a property where a sex offender lives - that could be used as a prison for a sexual slave. Broken down structures, locked rooms, basements, attics, etc. Board fences that do not allow outsiders to view the property ("prison courtyard") should also be a huge red flag. The property had multiple structures & a board fence. If it were protocol to check for this, Bozo Garrido would have been found out long ago.

I almost wonder if Garrido wanted to get arrested and so he went to UC Berkeley and behaved erratically on purpose in front of the police ladies since his parole officers did nothing when they received the report that Jaycee's daughters had been seen in his yard.

How does a man who is a convicted sex offender and on parole home not completely searched how can he explain young girls at his home? This is an outrage the only reason this man was actually caught was he thought they had figured it out, but if he had just not said anything when he was brought into the office nothing would have happened. His parole officers are to blame here.

That mothers intuation is Gods gift that can never be taken away very proud of these ladies for going off of that first instinct cause if they woulda let this go these babies would still be in hell oh and i hope they got that promoation.And man jaycee ur amazing girl i know u went threw so much i cant even fathom 18 yrs of hell or giving birth outside it is very sad that she got preg so young but god does things for a reason and that beautiful little girl gave her strength and reason for living
