This video exported from Dr. Whitcomb's abdominal ultrasound lecture shows the technique used by the UC Davis Large Animal Ultrasound Service to evaluate the abdomen in horses that present for colic, fevers, weight loss, diarrhea, reduced appetite or anorexia. Such a complete exam enhances our ability to detect abnormalities such as colon displacements, liver disease (hepatitis, hepatoliths, absesses), kidney disease (uroliths [stones], abscesses, renal failure), inflammatory bowel disease and many forms of neoplasia (cancer) that can affect abdominal organs and the gastrointestinal tract. This exam can be adapted for use in the acute abdomen with active colic signs to detect evidence of small and large intestinal obstructions that require surgical intervention. While we clip all horses that present to the Large Animal Ultrasound Service, this exam can be performed with alcohol saturation for rapid colic exams in thin coated horses.
