This is how it starts, first soda is not a necessity, then things like butter, syrup, sweets. You just don't need bacon this week or if you do want it you'll get a tax of 2 cents an ounce. Where do you draw the line where things that aren't a necessity and things that are?

These "soda" taxes spread onto all groceries. There is no way to prevent that. Cigarette taxes can be applied specifically to cigarettes and nothing else, so the price of cigarettes rises and there is some deterrent to buying them. Soda taxes cannot legally be applied to soda at the retail end, so it is necessary to tax the distributor instead. The retailers pass the cost on in the form of higher prices on all groceries, not just sodas, so there is no deterrent to buying sodas. It is so unbelievably stupid, yet the politicians keep pushing these idiotic soda taxes and act like they are going to work. It is really quite insulting to our intelligence. Please vote no on all soda taxes, and tell the politicians they are liars. Michael Bloomberg is an especially disgusting liar, paying for pro-soda tax ads that fill the airwaves with bold faced lies.

A tax on soda is because parents are too stupid to watch what their children are drinking. It's suppose to be the parents job, not the government. It seems big brother is always deciding what's best for us instead of letting us decide. Plus such a tax is pointless Do tobacco taxes discourage smokers from smoking? Clear Answer: No. It might discourage People from taking up smoking, but it certainly does not stop people who already do Do booze taxes discourage alcoholics from drinking? Clear answer: No What would make a soda tax any different

Men In black The government making money doesn't solve problems. Especially when they spend that money in the wrong places. As a Libertarian I don't believe in big government anyway

@Men in black I've seen doctor's advocate for this tax 6 year's ago in the hopes of reducing sugar related diseases. So it's clearly *not just* a cash grab.
