Samuel Johnson Johnson's last great work "Preface, Biographical, and Critical to the works of the English Poets", also known as "The Lives of the Poets". He chose 52 writers who mostly belong to the 17th and 18th century, approached by some London booksellers in 1777 to write what he thought of as "little Lives and little Prefaces, to a little edition of the English Poets", he readily agreed. He loved anecdotes, short amusing stories about a real incident and person, and "the biographical part" of literature best of all. The project however expanded in scope; Johnson's prefaces alone filled the first 10 volumes from 1779 to 81, and the poetry grew to 56 volumes. Various accounts are given of how Johnson came to write his "Lives of the Poets" during an episode of anti-Scottish sentiment in England. He divided the lives of the poets in 3 parts :- Life of the poet Character of the poet Critical assessment of his main poems. The Lives are ordered chronologically by the date of death, not birth, and range in length from a few pages to an entire volume. The major Lives are those of Abraham Cowley, John Milton, John Dryden, Joseph Addison and Alexander Pope. The minor Lives such as William Collins and William Stenstone are striking. Johnson's personal dislike of some of the poets whose lives he wrote, such as John Milton and Thomas Gray. William Collins:- Johnson liked the man but disapproved of his poetic manner: "he puts his words out of the common order, seeming to think, with some later candidates for fame, that not to write prose is certainly to write poetry. In 1785 under the title "Critical Essays on Some of the Poems of Several English Poets". In the same year appeared the new edition of Poems by the "Most Eminent Ladies of Great Britain and Ireland" with considerable alterations, additions and improvements. Between 1821 and 1824 Henry Francis Cary published several essays in "The London Magazine", collected and posthumously published in 1846 under the title "Lives of English poets", from Johnson to Kirke White, designed as a continuation of Johnson's Lives. Alexander Pope:- The life of Pope is at once the longest and best. Pope's life and career were fresh enough and public enough to provide ample biological material. Johnson found Pope’s poetry highly congenial. Dryden and Pope's works are readable and give social messages. Pope's write state forward. Pope constrains his mind to his own rules of composition. Pope is always smooth, uniform and gentle. Pope's heart is more regular and constant. John Dryden:- The style of Dryden is capricious, gives sudden and accountable change of mood and behavior, and varied. Dryden the motions of his own mind. Dryden is sometimes vehement and rapid. Dryden's five blazes are brighter. Dryden often surpasses expectations. In acquired knowledge the superiority must be allowed to Dryden, whose education was more scholastic, and who before he became an author had been allowed more time for study, with better means of information. His mind has a larger range, and he collects his images and illustrations from a more extensive circumference of science. Dryden knew more of man in his general nature and Pope in his local manner. There is more dignity in the knowledge of Dryden, and more certainly in that of Pope. His masterly comparison of Pope and Dryden he acknowledges Dryden as the greater poet. John Milton:- Johnson hated Milton's democratic principles and despised his impracticable philosophy. Johnson criticizes Milton's "Lycidas", as "one of the books which the reader admires and lay down and forgets to take up again", is the poem which diction is harsh, the rhymes are uncertain, and the numbers are unpleasing. Dr. Johnson accuses Milton of superior complex and says that he never praised anybody: "of his praise he was very frugal". Dr. Johnson was not prepared to accept Milton the man. He ridicule Milton's relationship with Cromwell and advocate of liberty. Johnson fairly satisfactory about his poetic performance and gives a full praise. Johnson dismisses of the early poems of Milton and no one is likely to grudge it. "He was a lion that had no skill in handling the kid". He praises "Comus", a drama, for its defense of virtue. He praises "Paradise Lost" and defends Addison's criticism on Satan. He says, "remarks on Satan are offensive to a pious ear". He praised "Paradise Regained" and "Samson Agonistis" for its dramatic work. He fails to appreciate the blank verse of Milton fully because he could not see the beauty of blank verse as such he was for rhyme. Dr. Johnson says in "Life of Milton" that Milton was born between 6 and 7 in midnight. According to Johnson, Milton's 24 sonnets are very worst. As he says "In these poems there is no nature, for there is no truth. There is not art, there is nothing new". Abraham Cowley:- He was justly proud of the "Life of Cowley '', specially of its lengthy discussion of the 17th century Metaphysical poets of whom Cowley may be considered the last representative. Johnson did not agree with the writing style of the 17th century. They easily mixed theology and intellectual concepts together in their works. They consider wit and conceit more in their work but the wit and conceit is too odd that the reader usually loses sight of things to be illustrated. The theme is peculiar, it was not decorated by conventional comparison, it was illuminated or emphasized by fantastic metaphor and extravagant hyperbole. Metaphysical poetry is not performing in the right direction. He compares Metaphysical poetry with the ideas of Aristotle. According to Aristotle poetry must have imagination, diction and metaphor which is lacking in him.
