David Harvey is in my top 5 of greatest intellectuals in human history... But maybe I'm just biased towards his respectable beard!

In Milwaukee we just passed a $104 million street car proposal. I am pissed. With this money we could house every single homeless person in the city. We could do something about 50% unemployment rate for blacks. Time to bring back the progressive movement.

Sorry, Harvey does not understand the distinction between a money user (NY City, households) and a money creator (the Federal government). Federal "debt" is nothing like household debt. Since dollars are a sovereign, fiat currency and have a floating exchange rate, the Federal government can **never** be involuntarily insolvent. It's absurd to even mention it especially in suggesting that we borrow dollars from the Chinese. Where did the Chinese get dollars? think about it.

So how do countries with their own currency "go bankrupt"? Answer: They owe the money in another currency. The U.S. has debts denominated in dollars. Mexico's debt was not denominated in pesos (which it could make without limit), but in dollars. The "bankruptcy" of Mexico following NAFTA occurred because it lifted their capital controls. Neoliberals! Gotta love 'em.

The owner of the super market stops you, probably by freely hired security personnel, When workers stop working, in the natural logic based world, will stop earning money and seek employment else where, where their skills are more valued. The less skilled worker will then have an opportunity to take the job of the previous worker.

To answer your question 9 years later, anthropology is an extremely broad study of human existence. A lot of anthropologists understand related sciences such as economics, linguistics, sociology, history, etc. Hope that helps.
