"The History of the Novel"
Thomas Pavel is the Gordon J. Laing Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and the Committee on Social Thought.
The presentation examines various kinds of prose narratives-Ancient Greek romances, chivalric stories, pastorals, comic and picaresque novels-showing how their rivalry led to the formation of the modern novel in the eighteenth century.
