In this video we look at the effectiveness of the U.S. Army’s Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP) in a Woodland Environment. This video will consist of numerous scenes where each will begin with a concealed stationary position (both with & without the use of vegetation), followed by a movement phase out of the initial position. The purpose of the video is to give the viewer a chance to see the individual camouflage pattern and how it looks and blends into this environment. There will be varying degrees of how much of the uniform will be exposed to the viewer, some scenes will only expose little more than perhaps a boonie hat, while other scenes will have virtually no vegetation covering.

In the Snowy Mountains of Afghanistan i'm glad I had it over Multicam. On at least one occasion it likely saved my life. in 2010 while foot patroling Wardak Province, i lost my footing fell roughly 10 feet down a steep, rocky, gavel grade, fortunately i fell onto my pack, but still got the wind knocked out of me by the loaded 249 I was carrying. Suddenly shots rang out from across a valley by 3 shooters. My squad took cover as they should have. The Sandpeople knew what general area i was in but i did not move. I slowly pulled my now single pointed slung 249 my way. (Quick note about the way i used and outfitted my 249; It had an Elcan M145 for the first few months, then i got an ACOG RCO-A4. This is the same ACOG used by the Marines on their 20" M16A4's, the optic was calibrated specifically for 20" 55-62 Grain 5.56 loads. This made me happy as i only used 20'' barrels and always carried two spares. I also brought two, sometimes three extra drums, I wanted the velocity, range, flat trajectory and explosive damage a 5.56 sized pill delivered by a 20" barrel vs a pill delivered by a 14.5" barrel. There is a difference. I've seen it, others have too) Back to Wardak: Fortunately i was basically invisible in the terrain i was in. Took care of the 3. On inspection they had 8 cell phones, two AK's but one guy had a Scoped G3 with OD Green Furniture and a Tokarev TT-33 sidearm in a Serpa like holster. I still to this day wonder how he got that G3......Of course we turned it, and all weapons, phones etc over. I wish i could have at least taken the Tokarev home like soldiers used to be able to. Oh well. May the three of the rest in piss. Now, Thanks to the Genius Biden US Exit strategy in Afghanostan, the Taliban have much better equipment thanks to the treasonous pull out and Treasonous ANA who couldn't draw a line much less hold a goddamn line.......I wondered how they would fare when we left. We trained and worked with hundreds of them. Trusted few, but there were many who wanted to fight the Taliban and were true Patriots of Afghanistan. I know for a fact there were many brave ANA Soldiers who manned up and fought until the last round, and could have kept fighting had their comrades not pissed themselves and betrayed them then quickly burnt or trashed any piece of ANA evidence they had. These same Cowards picked up AK's and fought against the ANA soldiers they betrayed.

I can hear some General somewhere saying "THE MEN WILL LOVE THIS! IT'S DIGITAL AND UNIVERSAL" As an army dog, grunt, wearing this shit since 2005, I can tell you I'm sick of it. The UCP is garbage plain and simple. You're right about it looking good in NVGs, also decent in snow, gravel, and pigeon crap. It only does its job when it's dirty. However, being OPFOR as well as instructing training lanes, an infantry squad and platoon maneuvering through a woodland environment in the UCP is recipe for disaster. When the BDU was still in service, I had trouble finding the rest of my fire team while in fighting positions. With the UCP, I don't have that problem usually. Not to mention, all the gear, rucks, sleeping bags, and helmets, covered in it makes it pretty easy to discern where people are, even when camouflaged. Thanks for the video, the USMC always has had it right when it comes to camo.

Well the Marine Corps made their pattern exclusive to their service, setting off the every branch has their own camo pattern trend. Also while the Army messed up on this one, the Army has been the main developer of camo patterns including your praised woodland and even MARPAT indirectly since it's based off of CADPAT which was based off of research done by the U.S. Army.
@WallyMerc06
@WallyMerc06 9 жыл бұрын
Ulfbert Research and integration are two very different things. While I praise woodland, because A) It was effective for the time and actually did have the characteristics needed to hide individuals...., especially when proper vegetation and natural materials were used in conjunction B) Soldiers looked and felt more soldierly, more menacing, prideful, and dare I say respectable, it did have its drawbacks. Pride comes from the uniform standards we had to uphold, ironing, starching, etc.and less from the actual pattern, however, how you look does have an effect on how you view yourself to an extent. Woodland was arguably too dark for most environments and I feel now the Army is getting it right with the new pattern being released soon. Although, gone are the days of pride in the uniform, shining boots, and appearance, the most important part is the camo, which indeed does have a direct correlation to soldier survive-ability. As far as the Marine Corps goes, well that's the Marine Corps, I have always respected their discipline, marksmanship training, and pride in their Corps. I don't have a problem with them having an exclusive pattern (other than governmental financial constraints) as long as it is effective. However, even the USMC has fallen from what it once was in my opinion,,,current Devil Dogs may disagree. The last bastion of service sanctity lies within the combat arms units of the two branches (more specifically infantry and armor) and even that is slipping away. Sorry for the rant lol

I always thought the US army chose this camo style because it was sick of the old woodland BDU greying out after repeated washines. Deciding to go straight to grey and save the process of greying out by washing. Funny when you think about it. BDU's in woodland worked great until fading after repeated washing (greying out) and the UCP don't work at all unless there unwashed and then not really......is the army just trying to save water?????

Ucp is good as a universal camo from a distance. Light tends to bounce around in an environment and the color of the camouflage will absorb it. You have to understand how light works to see its effectiveness. And how light effects colors. And the ucp gray is what makes it work so well in all terrain. Also, human vision always has a blurring effect at distances, and the little contrast ucp has complements that effect. All in all, it's more effective than you think. Of course, soldiers always see the camo they wear up close, and up close, yes, ucp is terrible under direct lighting. But, unless you're wearing a ghillie suit, no camo up close is undetectable.

True, grey solid camouflage was very popular in WW2: Norway, Finland, Yugoslavia, Germany and the Netherlands all used grey. And grey was used in the early 1800's. In field tests grey was considered more effective then green. The most famous user of grey during that period was the Confederated Army. And dark grey is indistinctable from Olive Drab/ Green from a distance of 50 meters/ 55 yards. Due to the same color intensity. Flecktarn has even medium grey in lieu of medium green in its pattern.

When I was in (01-09) we called it `spork'. As in a one size fits all approach to camo. Trying to do everything with one uniform results in doing nothing well at all. Urban and sometimes desert (if you get it dirty enough) and the occassional river bed or other rocky areas are the only place this works okay. That and it will dissappear in gravel like nothing else, so don't drop your hat in the parking lot. Big fan of tiger stripe, multicam, and good `ol woodland BDUs.

UCP is actually a very good camouflage pattern, as it greys with distance - you wont look like a dark blob at a couple hundred yards. Color is not always the most important factor in blending with an environment. UCP is particularly effective in arctic environments, and could very well be the best urban camouflage pattern ever created. UCP also works well at night, as colored light is much less intense, leading to great use of UCP's grey color scheme.

I think you should try to do your tests from a bit futher out, or try at different distances. Because every camouflage will change as you get further away. Camo such as MARAT or Woodland would just look like a black blob from far out and from behind cover the out line of your body would show a lot more than a lighter Camo such as UCP, MC and ATACS. And well let's face it the enemy is never going to be that close to you like the camera in the video, and if they where then no Camo would really work. Also why is everyone hating on UCP. As far as my eyes are telling me it did a decent job a lot harder to pick out than dark Camo like MARPAT.

This pattern works exactly how it is supposed to: Open field long range it becomes invisible (which in realty most engangements are not closer than 100m) unless: it is an urban environment, in which case it is perfect, or in a woodland environment at close range, in which case you better be hiding behind something or you will die anyway. Of course it is not perfect but then again no pattern is. Sure, for example CADPAT might be invisible in a lush green forest, but stick it in a city, a field, a desert, or anything else and it is horrible.

I love the cut of the ACUs. It doesn't blend well at all here, but I'm picking up some sets to dye. The green dye trick Bruce showed makes it work well in the summer around here when things are super green.

Thanks for all these tests, Brent. There's a great deal to learn by watching your posts. A LEO family member gave me a fair pile of UCP MOLLE gear after his department received a huge donation of surplus from a local NG unit, so I'm curious as to how well it would work in the late fall and winter, with and without a bit of light snow. The terrain in your videos is pretty similar to my area (northeastern US), although foliage comes out a good bit later in the year and drops off earlier judging by your time stamps. Any feedback from you and/or other vets who have worked with this pattern would be welcome. Thanks again for sharing your skills with us.

The more out in the open you are, the easier you are to spot. This is probably because the pattern was never intended to "blend" you in the environments, but just to make you look more passive to the eyes. When you are in concealment, like behind a bush or whatever, it works fairly well, but when you try to lay down out in the open, you stick out too much. I'm not so sure if that's necessarily the fault of the pattern, or you're use of it because certain camouflage patterns are designed to be used in certain ways, so you gotta think about that especially with a UCP. Because as I'm trying to say, the color is not supposed to match, it's the tone that's supposed to match when you're out in the sunlight or the shades which I think it does good in. Overall, my opinion is that the color is off, but I think it does a good job of blending in the tone of the environment when you're in the shades or the sunlight; you're as dark as the shades and as bright as the sunlight. And as long as you're in concealment and not out in the open, it doesn't work so bad.

I've never thought the digital style camo was very good. At least not in a heavy wooded environment. The pattern is too tight. It looks more like one solid color from any distance. I would think it would work pretty well in a desert or maybe a mountain/rocky environment. But it looks so cool!!!

UCP works pretty well in the mountains of East Tennessee. The pattern and colors blend very well with the grayish outcrops of limestone and siltstone covered in lichen, which makes up a lot of square miles in East Tennessee, (especially in the fall and winter season with faded greenery). I imagine this pattern would work very well all the way up the Appalachian range, but, that is a very thin slice of America overall and hardly qualifies as 'universal'. . .

It's not as horrible as we like to think. It actually creates an illusion at a distance, making it appear like it has the color of its surroundings. Of course it works better, the closer the surrounding colors match the UCP.

UCP isn't to bad in mountain areas, it's a pretty good urban camo (destroyed urban areas with a high amount of concrete buildings) and it works at snowy landscape. So UCP isn't a universal camo, but very specific.

UCP in my personal experience is really good at night and in shaded areas oddly enough however once sunlight hits it if you havent been rolling around in the dirt and it hasnt faded a little bit it stands out over everything. No combat experiences but just out messing with buddies in the place I used to live in during high school. I think Multicam is a much better choice and hope it serves our men and women well

And airsofting in this I found my friends unable to pick me out assuming I don't try to hide in the open. I think something to consider is that there are more people who tend to be not fully color blind but cannot see the difference between green and grey. I have a friend who cant tell the difference between both colors and there is some foliage green in ucp. Fg can be mistaken for grey which is good for urban environments but it can also be effective in green.

I'm sorry, but from what I can see from the video this camo is not as bad as popular opinion would have you believe. Although the concept of one pattern for all environments is a losing proposition when compared to area specific patterns, it really beats some other "green" designs. It is actually a very interesting design and definitely breaks up the human silhouette and does not suffer from the "black blob" effect others do (CADPAT, I'm looking at you). In the shade it really does the job. At a distance I believe this would definitely make you invisible in most environments.

I'm glad that the Army got rid of this camouflage, it can only blend in with rocks,gravel, and gray mountains, other than that it can't work anywhere. No matter how good of a position you were in this video, I managed to spot you in seconds., that's how useless this pattern is. The Multicam and the OCP patterns are much better.

What strikes me is that the overall intensity / lightness of the pattern isn't too bad, at least under these conditions. The colors, though, are too far toward the cold/blue end of the spectrum. Omitting a dark or black tone also seems to have been a mistake, since the pattern winds up looking really flat.
