I do something a bit similar that I have had some good luck with but I attack the arm on the side other then the one I am controlling. I also use a more standard grip for the attack. it comes on very fast

my one cent worth comment... north-south position is a solid position for ufc rules mma or bjj tournament rules, however, in One FC and self-defense, north-south should be used sparingly as knee to head is a potential fight ending blow from the bottom guy. No comment on the technique by Master Vieira as he is a black belt in Bjj and I am not.

The guy on the bottom would never be able to deliver a strong knee if pinned in a good NorthSouth...No way..

+k9m42 sorry guy, happened in Pride. Can't remember the fight, but it is often in Pride highlights. Look it up yourself if you want to see a bottom guy knocking out a top guy from North-South position. You may want to consider not being so sure of yourself and your beliefs. "No way." Sorry, big guy, but "Yes way..." There's at least one strong case of empirical evidence negating your statement that someone "would never" be able to... Absolute statements such as yours should be avoided, for the most part, in a world where there is more grey than black and white. North-South is a good position, but not without its risks.

+Temujin Anything is possible including Moses coming back from the dead and giving me a hair cut, but it is highly unlikely. I would never rely on that. In a good north south you should not be low enough to let their knee anywhere near you. Let me know exactly what fight you saw it in because I bet there is other contributing factors. I can hold a north south on you until you are orange and I bet you would never land a effective knee. You are counting on a extremely rare anomaly against a high percentage technique....
