Jesuit Alumni and Friends of Detroit (JAFD) hosted the Director of the Vatican Observatory Guy J. Consolmagno, S.J., on Oct. 13, 2017 at the Detroit Athletic Club. Brother Consolmagno delivered remarks about "why we do science" and the intersection of science with faith. He also answered questions from the sold-out audience.
Br. Consolmagno was born in Detroit and attended University of Detroit Jesuit High School before earning bachelor's and master's degrees at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in planetary science. He went on to obtain his Ph.D. at University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.
Known as "The Pope's Astronomer," Br. Consolmagno was named by Pope Francis to be the Director of the Vatican Observatory in 2015.
