I’m a young expat in Udon Thani. Although it’s not too exciting here, the nightlife is still good. Many markets and clubs, especially for young people. A direct flight will get you to Phuket or Bangkok and a short drive to Laos. I would highly recommend Udon to live, it’s such a laidback life here.

My wife is from Isan and after dragging her half around the world while I was working I retired there. Quite a lot goes on in the villages, there are parties, and shows, with bands and dancing girls, plus sort of parades around when someone is going to become a monk. I am the only farrang around, which is how I like it. We do go to Bangkok regularly for a change of scenery and to see friends. But a week in Bangkok is enough and we head back. We keep ourselves occupied but not busy with farms, I love it. I do like your travel vids, saves me bothering to go myself lol.

It might come with there own struggles, but one thing I noticed when driving through the Isaan areas, people are happy and family means a lot. I've driven through and visited a ton of Isaan Provinces. I love that area of Thailand, I recommend that people get our of Pattaya and explore other parts of this wonderful country.

I've been traveling to Thailand since 1987 and have never visited Isaan. Living in Japan has allowed me to travel to Thailand several times a year, so I have had many opportunities to put it on my itinerary. I didn't. In the early days, I really enjoyed the beaches in the south like Phuket but got turned off it years ago by the stupid prices and taxi mafia. Since then, Northern Thailand, starting with Chiang Mai, has been my main vacation destination. I highly recommend it for anybody interested in motorcycle touring. Watching Chad's videos has made me realize that I'll probably not bother going to Isaan for the time being. That said, I could see how the cheaper prices and slower lifestyle could appeal to a retiree or a backpacker with plenty of time. My July flights to Thailand have been canceled by Air Asia. Damn you Coronavirus!!!

Udon Thani is a great city, it has a great little user friendly airport with cheap flights all over Thailand. There are many great things to do in Udon if you know what you are doing and where your going......:-) There are so many fantastic places to eat and there is lots of live music if you know where to look. The City holds lots of Thai and Chinese festivals throughout the year. But is is not a tourist city, it takes time to learn and discover it's beauty. I have many Thai friends there that have helped me in this regard. Udon has sizable Chinese/ Thai residents and in my opinion has one of the best Chinese New Year celebrations in Thailand where the whole centre of the town is transformed into theatre, music, food and fireworks. Nong Prajak Park you went to was undergoing major renovation work when you were there. The park has a massive lake with a large island in the middle that is often used as an outdoor music festival venue, it has outdoor gyms all around the park with cycler hire, real Thai massage by the lake and some great places to eat with outdoor areas often used for traditional Thai dancing and yes big yellow floating ducks....lol. But most important of all Udon has many beautiful Isaan ladies that definitely make the best tour guides and girlfriends in Thailand........:-)

Udon has one of the biggest farang populations in Thailand. There are heaps of teachers at this university town. Thais aren't looking at you like an alien, they are looking at you like your just another farang idiot. That town has been crawling with farang since the 60's.

My first time in Udorn was in 1984 and all that 80’s I spent all my holidays there. Built a house about 30km outside the city. At that time people pintch my white skin because it was guite rare farang to travel or stay there. Of course there has been white people from early 60’s. Lots of US army people was there during a Vietnam war time. They used Udorn airport for their bombing flights to Cambodia.

My takeaways from Udon Thani were phenomenal spicy Isaan food and alcohol-soaked evenings of morlam and lukthung music at the local Tawan Daeng roadhouse bar. But I imagine that’s closed right now due to the “situation.”

Udon is good for 48 hours at the most. Any place outside of Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya. The rest of the country is quite laid back with nothing much to do. Khon Kaen is ok like from your other video. You should try inner Isan near Buriram and Korat and Uttaradit, Sukothai, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Down south Nakhon Si Tammarat, Thong Song is even more isolated and far. Thanks for sharing and love to go back and do the trip once again. Good luck and be safe

In my opinion Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai are special case in Thailand. Many Thai people are come from or live in place similar Udon, so more truly daily life in there you can see. Maybe Isan quite boring in this period because no night life, no Mor Lam. But still glad to see you bring normal scenery in Udon for us and I really don't think it is a failure trip, maybe we will see something interesting in next days, who knows :)
