It was awesome seeing a bunch of udus back to back I gained a ton of insight. Great playing!

Hi, Rick that Udu with the skin on it was made by Joe Augu of AfroRhytms . He is a master pottery from Nigeria of the Ibo people. I use to go up Drummers World and Frank Ippolito's in the seventies. It was like being in a master percussion class. Thanks for sharing excellent tutorials.

I've just learned of the UDU Drum and its principle may help me with this cup instrument I'm working on. I was trying to make something like a xun or ocarina - a vessel Helmholtz resonator like the UDU Drum. However, those instruments are blown like a flute, and I've been struggling because I'm just not able to get the hang of blowing a tone. The UDU Drum doesn't need to be blown though ... just slap a hole and the other one will sound! What I hope will work is to have a rubber coated board with holes in it. I slap a cup over a hole to produce a note. This size of the hole and the size of the cup determine the pitch. So, there could be maybe 25 holes and 3-5 different sized cups.

Are they uncomfortable to play? seems like slapping clay for the length of a song would be uncomfortable!

Not at all. If you play alot of hand drums you will develop calluses so it's a non factor after a few years.

Has anyone ever seen these incorporated into the drumset? Played with sticks of some sort? Mallets? Rubber mallets? Brushes? I own the newer one. I know. Outside the box, maybe in the snow....but.

Yes, you can. Using a Ludwig snare stand, Harbor Freight cart rubber wheel without the inside, for holding the Udu and Jeff Hamilton brushes played on the neck of the Udu. Now part of a drum set solo or beat.

Isn't that drum your playing more like a GHATAM from India ?
