If one goes through the records of Euro tournaments in the last 30 years, Greece is the only country that had such a hard route to victory and such obstacles to overcome. Not one, but two games against the very strong hosts (Portugal), against the reigning champions (France), against the best in-form team (Czech Republic) and against the team destined to become the best in the Europe and in the World (Spain), and came out of these 5 games with four wins and one loss. Against these particular teams, in 450 mins of football Greece only received two goals. Had it not been for 1987, it would have been the greatest surprise in international team sports.

For those who say that all this was just a matter of luck...this was probably the best demonstration of defence we have ever seen in a big tournament. As a portuguese, still today I ask myself how Greeks have done this. It was so tuff to see this match but in the end I ask myself who deserved the win? not the most beautiful football playing team but the strongest. Portugal did an outstanding campaign but Greece beaten us twice and kicked out the 2nd and 3rd best teams of tournament (France and Czech Republic). Very hard to say this but felt like a fair ending. Thanks bro! I remember we also beat Portugal 2 other times & tied once in those years before & after the Euro 2004, so Greece had Portugal’s number. Also, Greece beat Spain inside Spain with 10 men to qualify for the Euro 😃 They went on almost a 1 1/2 Year undefeated run as well before the Euro. Everyone underestimated them, but the results were there. A fine tuned defensive machine with tall & strong bodies dangerous off set pieces. They interviewed many of the players after all these years & they all said their height, strength, & stamina was above all other teams. They also said that when they walked our of the tunnel in the Final, they could feel the weight of the world on Portugal’s shoulders just from their faces & they knew they were gonna win it all at that moment. They also said, they were happy to see Portugal winning it finally with 6 draws & a defensive style of their own 👍🏻

Winning against the home team put the confidence of any team on highest standards when the home team is considered one of the favorites. In the end, on every sports, it’s like 80% about mind and mental. The physical and individuality do the rest. Trust me. When all believe, it’s possible to do unimaginable achieves and that was what Greece had done in 2004. If you analyze each players career, you will find some of them with interesting paths but nothing special, like Dellas a couple of years in Roma, Giannakopoulos in PL, Charisteas in Bundesliga, Zagorakis in Bologna but not remarkable careers. It’s all about the “momentum”. Portugal in 2016 was not favorite but was on 2nd lot of favorites because had amazing players. Nowadays, would be like comparing Burnley win Premier League vs Tottenham winning it. But it’s very curious they way we won in 2016. Portugal always had been an offensive team, no matter the opponent but we never achieved a trophy. When we played defensive and boring football, we did it 🤣

I was 10 years old back then and these memories won't fade till I'm gone man. The whole country was celebrating for days. One month later we had the Olympic Games in Athens, the first time for over 100 years that the Games came home. Next year we win the European Championship in basketball and even the fkn Eurovision lol. In 2006 in the basketball World Cup we beat the Americans scoring more than 100 pts and reach the final. Early 2000s were a golden age for kids in Greece. Such great memories, I hope that we will see something like it again in the future, though football today is a lot more predictable than it used to be.

I'm Greek.. summer of 2004.. I was 25 years old.. before the start of the Euro I made a bet (first and last time I ever did).. 20€ that my favorites, the Czech Republic will win the trophy.. it was a triumph for our team just to qualify and go to Portugal.. our expectations was to score a goal, or to make a win (could you imagine?) after every achievement our team did in the group stage, I always had my eye on that GREAT CZECH team.. Nedved, Poborsky, Barros, Rositski, Koller, Smicer, Jankulofski and more.. we play against France (euro and previous world champions at that period) at the quarter finals.. my thoughts and I guess of every Greek was: "ok, it was a gun run.. time to pack our bags and head back home.. I mean, there's no way.. how could we possibly pass France?" after the miracle of going past the French, we play against "my bet", "my team" the Czechs.. I was like "there's no way, these things happen only in cinema, in Disney films, this is real life.. there's no way".. the Czechs came in giving 100% of their ability.. only team that didn't underestimated us.. we were suffering for 90 straight minutes.. I was like "we are so lucky, but there is really no chance for us, no way.. no, how?" I had this exact attitude through the whole first half of overtime.. I had this exact pessimistic attitude even when we won that last corner kick.. BUT WHEN WE SCORED THAT GOAL.. I KNEW! I swear to any gods there are out there.. ask any Greek you may know.. the time Dellas scored that goal everyone knew.. WE WERE CHAMPIONS! WE'VE JUST WON THE CUP! it was beyond certain (can't really explain it, you have to be Greek to understand).. the final game was the easiest of them all.. everyone was expecting the end to celebrate.. we would have won that final game even if the best players of Europe unite and play against us.. we would have won that final game even if we played against Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad and Dalai Lama.. IT WAS DONE!! the craziest celebrations in Greece was when we went past the Czechs.. because everyone understood/realized that we were European Champions.. the final game with the Portuguese was just the... "coronation"! ps1. it's crazy how in a split second you can go from absolute certainty of failure to absolute certainty of success! (definition of Greece in a sentence) ps2. best 20€ I've ever spend!

I feel like this moment doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Greece were huge outsiders and to win the title in 04 was astonishing. I understand Leicester's title but this too was on that level. Football is not just about fancy skills and offense. It's also about tactics and strategy. Fighting with what i have, be the best version of myself. This is what Greece did back then with Rehagel, what Mourinho did with Porto and Inter or Santos with Portugal in 2016.
