Interesting what they say about the work rate of modern full backs to be part of the attacking process. Alan Kennedy scores from open play in the 1981 European cup final. Phil Neal scores from open play in the 1984 European cup final. Plus Neal scored a penalty in the 1977 final. So either these guys were ahead of their time or its modern media making out what happens today by many full backs is something profound. I think the latter.

Burns Tennis attacking full backs have been a thing since 1950s and 60s with Brazil. It made its way over to Europe. During the late 80s to 90s it was used slightly less to increase defensive solidity but it’s back from the late 90s onwards.

Would be interesting to see how V.A.R would judge Whelan’s collision with Tancredi. I don’t think it was foul. Goalkeeper is still running towards the ball when Whelan has gone up for the ball. It’s not as though he has gotten to spot and been collided into. But possibly VAR may have chalked it off.
