UF-WIFI6 GPON. What is inside that makes it awesome?

Had a very unusual ONU damage and I've never opened one up. The antenna connectors inside make it easy to mod with longer ranges. Also the fiber is just a SFP stripped down with a SC connector really neat setup in a small $99 form factor.
I think a external antenna must be installed on this now?

Routing RF far on a circuit board is annoying: You have two choices for how to do it: microstrip, where it travels on the surface. This also behaves as an antenna, receiving noise from things it passes close to. And buried stripline, where it travels inside the board, which is expensive because it requires more layers and you can't really have components on the outside where the stripline is. So at some point the price of a pair of hirose connectors and a prefab rf cable becomes appealing.

Really nice explanation of why that is on the inside. My thoughts were they could mass produce a longer range version maybe with external antennas.

@@briceperdue7587dang those things are expensive. Does it take a lot of justification to deploy new ones or is it a normal expense?

The heatsinks look like cast Zinc. Very odd IMO, aluminium casts nicer and obviously works better to transfer the heat about. Zinc can be a tiny bit cheaper, not sure why it's being used there though. Lead is way too expensive (and also too soft/incompatible with ROHS) to use in a casting like that.

Ah, Zn is heavier than Al - maybe they just wanted the thing to weigh more and not feel "empty" so used Zinc?

I think your right it's less for the heat and more for the "feel like something"

Nice yeah I've put in 400+ of these first time I opened one up see what is going on inside. It's a fantastic device vs UF WIFI version.

Re. Antennas It will be multiple chains of wifi If you look at one of those fancy spider routers, this is the smaller range version of that. 4x internal antennas. Re. Coupling - i dont think female SC plugs exist - they are all just couplings.
@briceperdue7587
@briceperdue7587 5 ай бұрын
Yeah your right about the SC female I just assumed it was something fancier. The Antennas are really interesting as you can just drill in 2 SMA connectors and make a epic long range version of the UF-Wifi6

These UF-Wifi onts are the most unstable and buggy Pon devices I have ever encountered. They crash in mysterious ways and are "repaired"only by truck roll. Thank God we are now retiring hundreds of these and are replacing them with either the UF-Loco or nano G these run way more reliable and can even work with non ubiquiti GPON systems albeit with a few caveats. The issues with Ubiquiti pon come up after a few months of uptime not instantly

UF WIFI = total crap and the UF LOCO is incredibly reliable I agree with you. This is the newer UF WIFI 6 and it's been about a 99% hardware reliability for us (with about 500 in service) over the stupid UF WIFI which had like 50% reliability during Covid times.

I think that heavy metal they use to make electronics pretend to be heavy and not fall off of things is Pewter. probably a leadless blend to be ROHS compliant

I agree as well this an option a customer can also provide there own GPON SFP for a pluggable option.

This isn't to be confused with Unifi. It is a GPON media converter it can or cannot have router functions that is up to the user.

can you build some optical network taps? could be a good product to sell on the sidePassive, Secure Technology Provides passive access at 1000 Mbps without data stream interference or introducing a point of failure Connect up to six monitoring devices to six different links All-optical design is optimized and tested for GigaBit fiber networks Permanent in-line installation without affecting network performance Passes all full-duplex traffic (including errors) from all layers for comprehensive troubleshooting No IP address is needed for the Tap or monitoring device, enhancing monitoring security Completely transparent to the network and requires no power Fully RoHS compliant
