Hughes was part of the older generation of fighters where wrestling and ground and pound ruled, and you didn’t need to know how to strike. Then he started facing wrestlers he couldn’t take down and who had better striking skills, so he was fucked. Tito Ortiz the same thing.

Danny Holder debatable. The best wrestler he faced in his “prime” was Sean Shark who is too small for WW. Again I think Hughes is great but he benefited from just being a better wrestler than the competition and was a horrible striker. Crazy to me the UFC doesn't actively go after D1 college wrestlers. The fight game is different though.
@fuchboi8725 жыл бұрын
The UFC doesn’t but MMA trainers actively scout D1 wrestlers right out of college to get them ready for the MMA. Johnny Hendricks is an example of a D1 wrestler that was scouted out of college and provided room and board by his trainers until he became champ and they could recoup their money with a profit. College wrestlers are the most successful discipline in MMA, look at the upcoming title fight between Usman and Covington, both D1 I believe.
@0319T5 жыл бұрын
Lath Law usman was d2. Dominated his weight class though, was in the running with Brent metcalf for most techs one season
@fuchboi8725 жыл бұрын
Terry Mason Usman is so dominant with his wrestling I just assumed he was D1. I just recently got into watching collegiate wrestling so I’m not familiar with with some of the wrestlers from a few years back. I guess MMA is more about how you adapt your wrestling than what division you were in, guys like Kevin Lee do pretty well even from a smaller school.
@ws80615 жыл бұрын
@@fuchboi872 yeah I know guys like Bob Cook go after D1 guys. Seems like a lot of the big name guys are looking to go straight into mma after 2020. Bo, Gwiz, cassar just to name a few.
@ws80615 жыл бұрын
@@0319T wow I had no idea he was that dominant also didn't realize he was in college that far back but I guess it makes sense since he was an alternate on one of Askren's national teams. Crazy to think Metcalf is already done with wrestling and Usman is just reaching the pinnacle of mma.
