@chrisliowknicksfan4 жыл бұрын
I'm writing a super long wall of text below, but I wanted to say upfront that this is a great video and that you really did a good job being comprehensive and not just cutting around to different chunked up clips like I've seen some other videos do. You were also very clear on what one fighter was doing and clearly stating which direction that corresponded to, which is also something I've seen other people skim over or skip entirely. My comment below is intended to be supplemental advice for those learning based on tips/tricks that helped me. Something I think that is confusing a decent amount of people is the continued phrasing I'm seeing on pretty much every ground game tutorial video, which is "watch which way he is moving" or "watch which way he is trying to go". The former is sometimes wrong or at least misleading and the latter is technically correct but may not always be clear to someone who doesn't have much experience. The real key here is to learn the indicators/signals and learn to spot them. A vast majority of the time it's limb-based as opposed to looking at the opponent's body language or overall body movement. For example, when on the bottom in full guard, you should ONLY be watching the other guy's hands. You technically can notice small differences between his 3 transitions by watching his body, but the earliest and clearest indicators are which hands drop. His hand on the left side of the screen drops down, you flick left. Right? Flick right. Both hands on chest? Flick up. This may be obvious to some people, but heavily emphasizing looking at hands ONLY and not worrying about anything else was by far the best tip that actually helped me EXECUTE transition denials in real time. Esp since in most real fights, the opponent is mixing in pitter patter strikes in non-postured-up positions, which makes trying to watch his torso/head virtually impossible in some spots to react to with even minimal online lag since even those weak strikes will shift his torso/body slightly. But using the same full guard example...zoning in on the hands and ONLY the hands is far clearer here. Not only are the hands more obvious and happen earlier in the transition...there is also a very stark contrast that you can pick up on from his hands moving to strike your head vs moving the complete opposite direction for any of the transitions. When on TOP in closed guard, the same principle applies except with your opponent's legs/hips. This one is probably the most obvious of all the top-side denials, but even then a lot of people struggle actually executing it in time in a real fight. For me at least, learning to key in on ONLY the legs and not worry at all about the rest of the body (which, BTW, moves the OPPOSITE direction for either of the directional escapes to standing) was what helped me actually pick this up. Let's look at one more example in the half-guard as the guy on the bottom. Here there are really multiple indicators...you watch the 'inside' hand/arm for defending the pass directly to full mount. You look at the head, however, for the other two options. This is where you focus on what the tells are for both of those options. Head goes to the other side of your face (side control transition), you flick the same direction as the head. Head goes up? Flick up. While there are multiple possible indicators here, you can treat this position as really only having one in the head. The pass directly to mount is not only very obvious compared to the other two...it also has the most generous timing since it is considered a riskier and more difficult transition to pull off as the guy on top. Therefore, you can drill half guard by learning to watch the head and trusting yourself to be able to naturally react to the opposite scenario (hand on hip for full mount pass) for when it comes up. Keep it as simple as possible. The final piece of advice is to be familiar with what options are actually available to your opponent in his current position. A majority of the time, the DOWN option is not a valid one so it's automatically a free direction you don't have to worry about. In other cases, your opponent has only two options. Knowing which scenarios fall into this category is honestly the easiest thing anyone can do to the boost their ground game right now without even having a controller in their hand. When you KNOW you are only flicking left or right, it becomes much easier to spot and deny. On a related note, there are times where your opponent only has one 'real' transition option (for the most part at least). If you have been mounted (assuming the opponent doesn't have a full mount slam or any other special down transition), you should ONLY care about defending against him posturing up (and focusing on escaping yourself of course). I really don't care if he decides to abandon full mount to go take side control, and while being able to deny any of his transitions is going to be a positive in the grappling advantage and stamina department, it's simply not worth my time to even learn what the transitions are from full mount to side control if it distracts me at all from escaping or trying to prevent posturing up as close to 100% of the time as possible. The video alludes to this point, but I just wanted to emphasize it a bit more for anyone reading. In summary, you want to learn/memorize what indicators you are looking at for every possible position (top and bottom) and actively train those when practicing while blocking everything else out. You also want to memorize and eventually commit to muscle memory which transition options are on the table or even viable (see: point on not defending mount to side control transitions above) to be able to narrow your focus down to as few options as possible. This absolutely takes TIME and PRACTICE, but I think knowing how to 'learn' the correct (or efficient) way is the difference between being able to pick up on ground transition defense in a couple hours vs spending 8 hours getting rolled by the CPU and getting frustrated that you still can't reliably block transitions in time. Take it one position at a time and drill that position over and over before moving on to another. Treat it like "mastering" a position. I learned by "mastering" half guard bottom and full guard bottom and told myself "okay, 2 down and roughly a dozen to go. Time to learn half guard top and full guard top now!" to keep myself motivated with incremental goals instead of feeling overwhelmed by just how many different situations there are. Even though I'm still not an expert on the ground by any stretch (gonna take a moment to complain about how unforgiving the reaction time is to defending some of the more niche transitions, cough, backside, cough), I've come a long way in a very short period of time despite this being my first UFC game while also reading a lot of comments on YT and Reddit about people who have spent 5X as long training but still can't do any denials efficiently.
